The Seagate Momentus XT 750GB internal hard disk drive combines the best features of mechanical hard disk drives with those of SSHD units. This hybrid drive has boot and data processing times comparable to SSDs by way of its NAND flash components. It also has all of the same data storage components and high capacity of HDDs. With an RPM measure of 7200 RPM, you can expect SATA supported transfer rates of up to 6Gb/s. This Seagate disk has 32MB of buffer space in its cache. This big buffer translates into an average seek, read, and write speed of 11.0 and 13.0 ms respectively. The 2.5-inch form factor of the ST750LX003 makes it a practical upgrade choice for laptop hard drive caddies.Seagate ran extensive tests to make sure that desktop systems with 2.5-inch drive bays would access the full 750GB of capacity as well. Apart from laptop and mobile applications, the Momentus works well for high-performance gaming computers and multimedia editing workstations. These machines can use additional software buffers to send recently used information to faster flash memory. The access times for game data or video files working exclusively from the SSD half of the drive would be close to instantaneous.Once the computer gets shut down, each of these buffers writes all of the data straight to the Momentus controller. Engineers from Seagate designed the controller to manipulate data appropriation. It decides which data gets permanently stored in the standard HDD section of the volume and which goes to the SSD portion. None of these decisions will impact the amount of memory the OS uses. Seagate Momentus technology also makes decisions about the way the SSD-like portions of the ST750LX003 handle wear leveling.Individual NAND cells have a limited number of writes, so the Momentus spreads out usage over the entire solid state area. This extends the life of the microchip-based portion of the hybrid drive. All mechanical hardware parts are designed to last as long as the electronic components without performance losses over time. The platters themselves also have a long lifespan.These additional performance tweaks make this a handy second disk for laptops that boot from an installed disk. It's even compatible for RAID technology when it's installed alongside at least one other disk. Windows users can easily configure this drive to work with NTFS. It's also compatible with the ext3 and ext4 file systems used by GNU/Linux system software. It can support multiple partitions if you plan to use both operating systems. Single partitions can take up the entire capacity or a portion as small as merely 8GB. Its design makes it possible to create a 500GB partition for Windows while still leaving more than enough space for a second operating system.Computers allocated to a completely Unix-based userspace can see additional performance gains through use of the extended file system on this disk. It's optimized for use with open-source OS code. This optimization can also work with users of FreeBSD and NetBSD.

Just the fact that Seagate tackled the question of "Fast delivery data” mixed into a bit of a quick access SSD drive without actually creating a SSD drive. Being a big company one really doesn't know the truth out of hype but I believe I am not gambling on this one! I have installed this type from 500 GB to 1TB and all went well. Just remember the drive will adjust for the random access timing by arranging to the "Top of the List" programs as it finds itself building it's own most accessed programs database to execute a balance in the boot time. Let’s just say this drive "Thinks for Itself" and just gets better at figuring out it's booting routines after it settles down. This line of Hybrid hard drives is in my opinion the very intelligent choice of drives for the flexibility and balance of a Novice to Professional laptop builder! I upgraded my HP EliteBook 8560w original hard drive (Toshiba 512GB) with the Seagate Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid 750GB I bought on eBay. It has exceeded my expectations. Boot-up times are significantly faster for Windows 7 Professional (SP1). I like to think that program loading and cache management for FireFox, Google Chrome, and IE9 are faster now but it would take me too much time to quantify the difference. If you research the difference between this hybrid drive and a standard drive and a solid state drive, the hybrid drive uses a 32MB NAND solid state cache (many times more than standard drives) and uses something Seagate calls Adaptive Memory Technology to smartly swap the most needed data into cache so it's available quickly most of the time. Amazing storage capacity, and lightning fast just like an SSD.
This hybrid drive is perfect for laptops. I use it on my MacBook Pro early 2011. It runs so smooth and it boots up in less than 20 seconds. All applications open instantly. Including heavy applications like Photoshop iTunes and Safari. It's like having an SSD that stores 750 GB of data. In terms of power consumption, I haven't noticed any difference from the momentous XT to the 5400 RPM stock drive. I absolutely love how fast and responsive my MacBook is, and also how fast it boots up and opens applications. If you are looking for an SSD and don't want to spend a whole lot of money on it, then this is the best choice you have. You will never regret buying this hard drive. King of hard drives by the moment! Make the right choice!
I personally dont review items, but has been a few days I felt the need of try a SSD. After searching reviews on internet I started to compare different technologies of hard drives. Since I own a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB starting this year, I realize that the differents between this hybrid drive and those SSD are almost unnoticeable (several blogs and videos show that) and I as a computer intensive user who has tryed this Momentus XT in many heavy software and games, can say the perfomance of this drive is REALLY AWASOME and enough for today and some years ahead. So I ended my SSD search and decided to buy another Momentus XT but now the one with 750GB that comes in Sata III speed (leaving this for my Asus G53SX little brother, my Gateway Netbook, that in fact only supports Sata II) . I ... I personally dont review items, but has been a few days I felt the need of try a SSD. After searching reviews on internet I started to compare different technologies of hard drives. The HD works great, brand new, and the OS and software on it worked without having to do anything. Some others I have seen require you to do all sorts of step by step patch and script gyrations in order to get the os and software to work but none of that was required for this one, just "plug and play". I would say that startup is not as fast as i would have expected but i believe this has more to do with the new os and not the HD, once the macbook is running the os then you can feel the speed of the SSD in the HD. I can not see ever buying a 'regular' HD again, and when you compare the price of a full SSD drive vs the size of this one, you get the best 'bang for the buck', speed and high storage space.
