  • Monte Walsh

In the heyday of western movies, there were certain actors that any producer or director would have made first choice for the leading man in his film; John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, and although not as iconic, guys like Randolph Scott, Glenn Ford, and Joel McCrea. If I were choosing today, Tom Selleck would be at the top of my list (probably tied with Sam Elliot.) The made for TV films he has done for TNT are just plain well done western movies, with accuracy in everything from the settings, costumes, and weaponry to the general flavor of the period and locale in which the film is set. This remake of the 1970 film starring Lee Marvin is a written in a bit more lighthearted vein -- there is a laugh or a snappy line every 30 seconds or so in the first half of the story -- before it ...

  • A true American hero

"Monte Walsh", is an example of the western genre in its finest tradition. Tom Selleck has truly found a home in the American western. The story is set in the twilight days of the great cattle drives as automobiles, trains and barbed wire began their final encroachment on the face of the west. The quiet, dry humor of this film reminds me of the John Ford classics of the past. At the center is Monte Walsh, a man who won't surrender his principals for money, fame or even love. True to his friends and the unwritten rules that guide a cowboys life. Heaven help those who cross him or the those he calls friend. It's a shame we have so few like him today.

  • Monte Walsh with Tom Selleck

In 2003, I worked as an IATSE set painter on this movie. Check out all the outhouses -- there MINE!! I painted every one of them through out the whole show. I really liked the close up on them -- after the cook put x-lax in the cowboys breakfast. This movie was filmed near Longview, Alberta, Canada. It took six months; from March to August, to create the scenes. We worked in freezing rain at the start, plus 40C in the middle and it snowed in August at the end. The really great thing for me is to see where the balsum wood corral gate was used (the horse rode through it in the corral) and the light green shelves (the bronc busted those up after it flew through a window and bucked in the store). Selleck fired the one director half way through and hired another one he liked to work with. ...

  • Buy it!

It's more like a history movie than a cowboy movie. Like all things in life, the days of the COWBOY had to end. By 1910 it was all over.
