Based on the novel by Zoe Heller, NOTES ON A SCANDAL is the story of Barbara Covett (Dench), a hard-nosed spinster schoolteacher, and her poisonous friendship with fellow teacher Sheba Hart (Blanchett). When the young and beautiful Sheba shows up as the new art instructor, everyone is charmed by her, including the embittered Barbara. Barbara is thrilled when her lonely life is shaken up by Sheba's overtures of friendship, as Sheba invites her to share in family dinners, and opens up to her about her marital troubles and personal longing. Barbara narrates her own feelings of longing to us from her meticulous diaries, and it becomes increasingly clear that her take on the friendship is uncomfortably intense, if not borderline delusional. Things reach a fever pitch when Barbara happens upon Sheba dallying in the art room with a 15-year-old student. She tells Sheba that she must end the affair at once, but decides not to report her to the school, and instead, to use her knowledge of the indiscretion to draw Sheba closer to her, and put her in her debt. But when Barbara's demands on Sheba become too high, things soon unravel, setting off a chain of events that will leave viewers chewing their nails to the quick, but unable to tear their eyes away.Both Blanchett and Dench are dazzling to watch as they deftly handle the barbed wit of Patrick Marber's screenplay. Directed by Richard Eyre of the Northern Theatre of London, and with a score by Philip Glass, NOTES ON A SCANDAL takes what could serve as mere tabloid fodder and plays it out on the level of Shakespearean tragedy.

    Edge of your seat Suspense

    This movie only had a limited release in theatres, and didn't happen to show in my neck of the woods. I was excited to finally see it on dvd, and I wasn't disappointed. Judi Dench is an outstanding actress and I can't help but compare her to Anthony Hopkins. Her character, Barbara, is absolutely frightening in this film. Not exactly Hannibal Lechter, but disturbing just the same. Cate Blanchett as Sheba is very believable. I think for a difficult role, she did an amazing job of making us feel sympathetic towards her and deplore her behavior at the same time. Excellent job of character developing in a short amount of time, I was hooked from the get go. The special features were interesting, I like knowing what the actors were thinking/feeling while filming. Good movie, Great actors. They ...

    Barbara Covett (Dame Judi Dench) is a master school teacher close to retirement. Cynical as she is, Covett's only tolerated by younger & less caustic colleagues. Covett lives a very practical private home life without the company of people, writing in her journal & taking care of her old cat, Portia. An attractive young art teacher, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett), becomes a faculty member. Typical of her demeanor, Covett notices Hart from a distance & begins to write in her journal about Hart's carefree spirit & riske' clothing. As her professional elder, Covett approaches Hart & Hart in turn invites Covett to meet her husband lecturer over lunch at their home.     Dame Judi Dench in a Surprising Atypical Dark Role

    This film scrutinizes that relationship between two senior and junior teachers. One of them becomes obsessed with the other. Rumors are circulated but they aren't nearly as scandalous as what's really happening within one of the teacher's minds. You absolutely must see Dame Judi Dench playing this dark dramatic role. It's not like her to portray this type of character. She's stellar at it and surprising.

    Buy this movie

    This is a great movie, you will need to see it to believe it, keeps you in suspense till the end, great acting and I would say this is an adult movie, not for children.
