Awesome seller! They sent this movie in a quality bubble mailer, with bubble wrap on both sides of the DVD case... And even a piece of bubble wrap between the top of the disc inside the case, to ensure it wouldn't come loose in transit! Listed in Very Good condition. Two Hammer-style Brit horrors from the 50s!
"Blood of the Vampire" starring Barbara Shelley and Donald Wolfit is the attraction here: a mad scientist uses asylum inmates for his blood experiments. A British film made to copy the Hammer Films horror style - it was fairly successful in '58 for Universal when released here in the U.S. "The Hellfire Club" was an obscurity when released in America. As it never played my hometown when originally released, on my first viewing of it on this DVD I found it of marginal interest as something neither fish nor fowl: not really a horror film, nor much of anything else. Nice widescreen transfers of both films, though, and classic horror fans will probably want the DVD - which includes some drive-in intermission clips to pad out the package. Two for the price of one.
I was trying to purchase Blood of the Vampire by bidding. I lost that bid. Much to my surprise I found this DVD which also has Hellfire Club. Both films are enjoyable, but I prefer Blood of the Vampire. It features the late great Barbara Shelley as the damsel in distress. A group of scientists trying to prolong life at the expense of others is using prisoners to fuel their experiments. I will not spoil the end, but say the intrigue is captivating. This is not a hardcore vampire epic, but more of a mischief by a mad scientist story. I was trying to purchase Blood of the Vampire by bidding. I lost that bid.
