"Read this book. If you love the sunrise and you want to see courage-the kind that stumbles and falls but rises and rises again. With love of family. And work that saves. My dazzling friend and colleague, Elizabeth Vargas, has stared straight into the lethal heart of addiction with the eye of a fearless journalist. She has written a book for us all about truth, bravery, and the hope that a new day brings."-- Diane Sawyer

Synopsis
From the moment she uttered the brave and honest words, "I am an alcoholic," to interview George Stephanopoulos, Elizabeth Vargas began writing her story, as her experiences were still raw. Now, in BETWEEN BREATHS, Vargas discusses her accounts of growing up with anxiety-which began suddenly at the age of six when her father served in Vietnam-and how she dealt with this anxiety as she came of age, to her eventually turning to alcohol for relief. She tells of how she found herself living in denial, about the extent of her addiction and keeping her dependency a secret for so long. She addresses her time in rehab, her first year of sobriety, and the guilt she felt as a working mother who had never found the right balance. Honest and hopeful, BETWEEN BREATHS is an inspiring read., Beloved former ABC 20/20 anchor Elizabeth Vargas share the truth about her alcohol addiction and anxiety disorder in this honest and emotional memoir. Elizabeth Vargas Is You

Elizabeth Vargas, to me, is like a person you see around town and at various functions, but you really don't what she's like on a one to one basis - this book let's you find that out. Intelligent, together, articulate, professional and attractive, Vargas has it all - until deep rooted anxiety and personal fears start to take over. Unfortunately, Vargas turns to alcohol to avoid, calm or numb those fears and emotions... and it gets bad in a subtle yet quick way. Self confident and knowing of herself, Vargas enjoys the jet-paced world of working for a major news network, its perks and its stresses. It's the stresses that bring back her anxiety, fears and her childhood. And so it begins with a glass of wine (female acceptable) to later becoming drunk, and all the misery, sadness and ...

  • Top critical review

Does not help the average struggling with alcohol. Elizabeth has impressive contacts. Write a book for those are the mid class Americans,

Elizabeth Vargas DOES give a compelling personal reveal. Her "solution" to her problem is to have a friend of her friend, come and live with her for 6 months. Sorry, very few people "can afford" to have any friend do that. Unrealistic solution for most struggling with alcoholism. Elizabeth, I ask, WHAT finally changed your mind? What CONVERSION did it for you? If you don't provide an answer to that, you have not helped people struggling to find their own solution. Your book was not clear. But compelling. Give me more information.

  • Not a page turner

My book arrived in perfect condition. I was hoping for something more compelling. I was also surprised by the naming of co workers. It would have made the situation worse. I don’t understand the world of journalism but I didn’t feel like I know much more about the inside world when I finished the book. It was a inside look into addiction but it was written so that it was difficult to feel empathy for Elizabeth. I do feel empathy but not because of the written word.

  • Must read if you have panic attacks

I enjoyed this book immensely. It was very compelling and I never wanted to put it down until reaching the end of the book. Very encouraging. My heart went out to her. A must read for someone struggling with anxiety & panic attacks. I look forward to watching Ms Vargas on 20/20.

  • Not bad

As a recovering alcoholic, I was looking for a like experience to draw from, particularly withdrawal symptoms. Her experiences, pampered by means, differs from most as quality rehab was affordable and accessible. A great read none-the-less.
