Product Information

Sharp-witted, zippy comedy about a woman who lives life to the absolute fullest. When her orphaned 10-year-old nephew shows up on her doorstep, a new life begins for both. Mame's digs provide a cool look at what the 1950s considered bohemian hip, too. Later became the Broadway warhorse, Mame. Academy Award Nominations: 6, including Best Picture, Best Actress--Rosalind Russell.

    A fanciful story!

Well, saw this many, many years ago and enjoyed it even more today. This is, without a doubt, a classic. The movie has held up well and appears historical rather than "dated" as the tales about life will always be true. This movie is worth your time and I guarantee you will rather enjoy it.

  • What's your favorite movie? Auntie Mame is mine.

There are special movies which linger in the memory, and having seen this at age 6 in 1958, "Auntie Mame" has remained not the "best film" of all time, but my "favorite movie" because of its heartfelt generosity of humor, its touching portrayal of love among eccentrics, and the inimitable dynamo that is Rosalind Russell at her (or anyone else's) peak of performance. Seeing it in widescreen is a must to appreciate the impact of the design and relationships of the characters onscreen. I also had the privilege of seeing the film again on the big screen at a revival movie theater in Dallas in the 80's, and I must say I cannot remember experiencing an audience having such a good time at a film before or since ("It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad ...

  • Auntie Mame

Great movie, very funny. I think it was a bit edgy for its time: kids mixing cocktails during prohibition, unwed mothers, racist relatives, and more oddball characters. But Mame has a good heart even if she is a bit naive. It's not easy to go from party girl to mother in one day. The sets were before their times, the costumes so fabulous I wish I could wear some of them now. The cast was hysterical and quite talented even with some of the stereotype characters- I think it is part of the times of the film. And it is interesting to me that many of those stereotypes are mocked within the story itself. You have to watch this movie more than once to pick up on some of the "digs." Mame is a memorable character full of life and always thinking on her feet. She has an undying ...

  • An Exccentric Aunt Who Loves Life and the Little Boy She Now Must Raise

Wonderful Movie About an Eccentric Aunt Who Loves Life and People! She adapts to what ever is thrown her way! She suddenly finds herself raising her brothers ten year old son. It is Love at first sight. Times get hard, but they have each other to get through it. In time Auntie Mame finds a wealthy oil man to love. Their struggles are over, but never the adventure! Wonderful cast of characters. As one of the house maids says to Auntie Mame- " You're Odd, Mame, but you're Loving, and I wouldn't want to work any where else!" Fun is the word! Course, I Love Rosalind Russell in everything I've seen her in. That is why I bought "Gypsy" too!

  • An American Comedy Classic

In 1955,James Tanner, who, under the pseudonym Patrick Dennis, wrote the runaway best seller AUNTIE MAME, a series of short stories highlighting the relationship of Patrick and his wealthy and madcap Auntie Mame. In 1956 it was then re-created as a Broadway comedy starring the magnificient Rosalind Russell, and became the hottest ticket in town. Tanner often proclaimed Russell to be the living embodiment of his semi-fictional aunt. Fortunately for us, the 1958 film stars Russell, giving the greatest performance of her career, after having honed it to perfection for two years on Broadway. The film was nominated for BEST PICTURE with nominations for Russell (BEST ACTRESS) and Peggy Cass, also from the Broadway production (BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS). AUNTIE MAME is a laugh filled step back in ...
