'The Leader Of The Resistance;. . .'
'Before this film, there was The Last Man On Earth. Laconic Charleton Heston convincingly portrays the doctor with the military. The monologue never verges beyond raving though, so you don't even get the idea that he's talking to somebody. But they are there, nonetheless. The Messiah and his plague-infected flock. They are convinced that Heston merely likes dominating their sorry asses for no purpose. So they hate him. They don't even know that he's got an immune vaccine and could cure them. So, typically enough, they murder their erstwhile benefactor as part of their mob mentality. Similar to other plague-infested, post-apocalypse themings, but the footage of vacant city-scapes strewn with the aftermath of the meltdown separates the film from the low-budget horror genre. The film continues to wobble between mainstream cinema and kitschy sci-fi mostly because of theatrical cosmetics of the plague-infected flock. They seem to be covered with white pancake make-up, Halloween wigs and blunked, 'critters-of-the-night' lenses. Their supposed albinoism has resulted from the secondary phase of the dreaded infection that has contaminated them. But that may have been to keep the youngsters from forming any political inferences. Eventually the contaminated half-lifers out-number Heston and The Messiah murders him. He dies on a modern art crucifix, his blood filling a fountain pool. Then, some of the yet uncontaminated survivors salvage a bottle of the blood to be used for an antidote serum. So that the act of The Messiah has, according to this twisted allegory, led the way to salvation for others. Would have benefited from being directed as a mainstream film, as the plaguers often seem to be clownish and amateurishly illumined. But of course, if they were presented dramatically, they may be too nauseating to want to think about, as they comprise about a third fo the film's actual footage. But Heston's great portrayal of the futile existence of the doctor rescues the lame perspective on the plaguers so that they present the character of a disgruntled actors guild meeting that went amuck. Again, this was done consciously, but when considered as a whole with the sequences of the city-scape and the aftermath, the audience may well ask themselves why the director would go to the Halloween mode for the squeamish. If the plaguers had seemed half-way real, the film could have been a powerful commentary on global conflict and the aftermath of bio-warfare. The social commentary even includes a minority plot, about the races of those that are infected. When Heston's brought to the camp of the clean survivors, the black, female ring-leader repeatedly acknowledges his hoojie whiteness. But eventually does screw Heston when they return to his place, for some partial and side nudity of her on the bed. But when the infected Messiah and his ADC confer, he reminds him to, 'leave alone his old hates and ways of before they had been infected; the plague has racially united those contaminated.' The Omega Man did not seem to get any nominations for cinematic accomplishment, but certainly could have been part of why Heston would be nominated as an independent for the presidency some years after.'

As an adaptation of I Am Legend, your view of this film will depend on whatever you think it butchered the source material or stayed true to its spirit. As a stand-alone film, it has its charms. The look of the vampires are memorable. The action scenes are action-y. The scene featuring "Woodstock" has enough in-jokes to make sense. The male lead who isn't Robert Neville provides enough fanservice for any male or female who dares to see this film. The female lead holds her own during battle scenes and has her own personality that doesn't exist just to get Robert Neville as a romantic partner at film's end. (Thank goodness the screenwriters made sure of that.) And Robert Neville has enough charisma to make rooting for him not a guilty pleasure. View if your preference has a preference to ... I remember watching this movie when I was a kid 11 years old, my dad took us to the drive in when those were as popular as MC donalds it today. Charlton Heston is indeed my favorate actor and this movie was one of his best. Its a little outdated my WMD is still a real threat. This movie captures your interest from the beginning to the end, a real masterpiece.

Omega man--not as good as I remembered . . . .
I remember watching this as a kid. I like the concept, but I forgot how Liberal pointed it was. I decided it buy it because I wanted to see it again, but didn't know if I could find it at any video rental store.
