    Great lens, but...

Image quality is great, build quality is almost great (except that the auto/manual focus switch ring tends to fail on these lenses), and the value is the best thing (most bang for the buck). One unexpected weakness i notice was that when you have the sun directly in your frame, the image comes out very, and I mean very hazy compared to other lenses I have. I'm not sure if it has to do with some kind of lens coating they didn't have back when these lenses were built, but I wasn't expecting that. The haze can look good for some creative shots, but it's hard to control it when you don't want it. The haze is not a problem if you don't include the sun in the frame though (which I love to do).

  • Misses 5 stars because...

I love everything about this lens except the M/A focus selector ring, which really is the Achilles heel of this lens. If yours is not already broken, be very careful with it. On the bright side, mine still works despite being broken; it just doesn't stay locked in A. Not a big deal because it takes a good bit of turning to go into M focus. Overall though, this lens is a great value, especially because they sell brand new for around $1200 and you can get a very nice used one for half that.

  • Great value, shows it's age a bit

Image is sharp, colors look great. Great lens and really a smart buy in 2018 (as long as your camera has an internal focusing motor). The only area where it really shows its age is in focusing. Fast, but not modern pro lens fast. Also, you can definitely hear the motor work when its is focusing. Its noisey enough that people around you will here it, but its not as loud as the shutter noise on my d750. Not as quiet as a 2018 lens from Nikon, but that is really overshadowed by its awesome value and great performance.

  • Great legendary optic!

This lens has a long and storied history with a legion of photographers singing it's praises. Add me to that list. This lens is much improved over the previous push-pull design which I previously owned. People claim it isn't for sports. I disagree. While it isn't the fastest focusing lens, it is fast and accurate. But this lens isn't perfect. While great at 2.8, it does show some color fringing in high contest areas. Also, it performs better at around 180mm than 200mm. But like almost all lenses, the extremes are never the strongest showing. But the extremes are totally usable. The amazing performance of the lens shows the slight compromises of it's extreme settings. Out of focus areas are pleasing. Handling is good but not as great as Nikon MF lenses. The build quality is second ...

  • 80-200mm bargain

I find this lens to be very sharp. The one I purchased on ebay is the older push pull zoom and focus style. Mine was in bargain condition with a few cosmetic issues, the glass is clean though and the images are crisp. A 70-200 VR is nice but you wont find one cheap. The two ring 80-200 is an improvement on this design and includes a tripod mount, but generally those lenses run about twice as much as this one. To use this lens with the modern digital cameras you can only use manual and aperture priority and must set the lens f stop in the camera menu. Once I did that I have no problems with metering or autofocus. I use the 80-200mm primarily for portraits and most often with the camera on a tripod. If you are looking for a sharp telephoto zoom for your Nikon at a small price, you ...
