New Palm Pilot IIIc... again.
It brings back many memories from when I had my first one about twenty years ago. I used it for several years until I couldn't anymore because the newer computers were not compatible with it. I got this one again to have redundancy for all my calendar events. This thing has great battery life; I charge it about once a month. I keep it handy at my desk for writing notes and calendar events.

I love my palm iic. The price was great for this item. If you want to be organized the palm iiic is just right. The palm iiic is not so out dated that you feel you are in the dark ages. The problem you will have is the compatibility to windows vista there is none(ha ha). So if you don't have windows xp or lower. Good luck finding a windows xp computer/laptop in stores(this i know from experience since i had to have divine intervention when i found my windows xp laptop 2-26-07). As i said earlier i love this item the battery lasts forever. You can read e-mail on this thing. The palm is a work horse i use it to write away from home instead of lugging my 6.5 lb laptop, i have a portable keyboard and i purchased quickword so i can also spell check my work . i have added other programs and ... Palm IIIc Is it for Me??
The Palm IIIc is an excellent PDA for the casual user. The color screen is great for all the games you want to down load to kill time in the airport. The Standard applications (address book, to-do list, etc.) are very easy to use, and because this unit is capable of being upgraded to PalmOS 4 (disc upgrade only)you can add the Message Pad application as well and quickly write your short notes. This unit may not be good for the heavy user, unless you plan on syncing quite regularly, as it is not equiped with wireless capabilities. One MINOR inconvenience... the cradle MUST be connected to a computer in order to charge the Palm, so you can not just leave the cradle plugged in as a charging location only.The Palm IIIc is an excellent PDA for the casual user. Simple, fast, and easy to use
I need a simple device for note-taking on the run, carrying to-do lists, noting expenses, and keeping contact info straight that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, is durable, and is easy to use. The Palm Pilot IIIc has it all, and for an astoundingly low price. I know there are plenty of newer PDAs out there with lots more bells and whistles, but for the money, this thing just can't be beat. Holds a charge for weeks, HotSyncing only takes a few minutes, and I can attach a portable keyboard when I want to sit and write for any length of time, without sacrificing power usage, or I can use the stylus to make notes by hand. The "graffiti" system is dead-simple to learn. Another nice feature with the HotSync is the ability to install or upgrade portable applications with little fuss, and to ... You install the Palm Desktop and the palmOne QuickInstall on your PC, plug the IIIc into the cradle, connect to the PC, turn on the IIIc, and press the Hotsync button on the cradle. It's that simple. It's compact (smaller than a paperback novel), light-weight, efficient, and intuitive. The color screen has clear, sharp focus, and the backlighting and text size can be set for low visibility conditions. If you don't need to reach the internet, and you don't need your telephone service built into the PDA, then this is something you should consider. It's built to last, and with 8MB of internal storage, has more than enough room for even the most copious notes you can take, and with the keyboard, eliminates the need for carting a word processor around. Do your work, go home, hotsync, and you have everything where you want it. My only complaint is that this model uses a Lithium-ion rechargeable battery, rather than the AA-size batteries of my earlier Palm Pilot III. This means I'm dependent on the cradle for re-charging, rather than being able to just pop in fresh batteries every couple of weeks, or rotating rechargeable AA batteries. A minor nick, really, given all the benefits. The LiIon replacements are dirt cheap on eBay, and many are available at higher storage, so that's actually a plus. It's a small price to pay for something that won't be bothersome for at least two years.

why didn't they make this into a phone?!

I bought a second unit for my husband but he's a programmer and didn't need a PDA, so eventually I scavenged the battery from his. Palm really, really supports its past products. The software available for free is amazing -- one of my favorite applications is the book reader. There are so many databases and games available that you can have a great time. But I take extensive notes at meetings, so I invested in a $20 word processor called Miniwrite that import into Microsoft Word, and now I can write books... When I switched the batteries, all I had to do to get all of my information back was to simply give the Palm the same user name I ... This is my third IIIc. I was so impressed (and relieved) that there was absolutely no hitch at all. I got the external, FULL-SIZE foldable keyboard that is so convenient (it almost fits in a back pocket), something like $10. So easy to use. I also got the little thermal printer, which cost about $25. Although the IIIc only has 8mg of memory and no expansion cards, if you are using this as a calendar and word processor with a few games, books, and databases thrown in, it is hard to run out of memory. And the battery lasts FOREVER! I eventually decided to go technogeek and got a Nokia 9500 communicator so I could have a cell phone that did the same things as the Palm IIIc. Well, almost the same things. the PC interface worked fairly well if I told both the Palm and the Nokia to sync with Outlook, although I prefer the Palm system. You can get shareware that will allow you to sync with both outlook and the palm manager (I didn't). The Nokia 9500 was a later version of the phone The Saint (that movie with Val Kilmer) used, and it does internet, camera, email, blah blah, FULL office suite including fax capabilities. It also has a book reader, movie player, etc. The keyboard is 6" long by 1.5" tall, querty, so you can really type on it. Battery life, couple of days. Both my Palm and Nokia were stolen about a month ago. I didn't realize just how much I loved my Palm until I started trying to replace my geeky brick cell phone (which I also loved). The closest thing on the market right now is the Google G1, but I hate it. Absolutely loathe it. Google tracks your every move and requires you to make a google account to use the phone. (didn't microsoft get sued for something like that?) Got it anyway. No word processor and the battery life is MAYBE 10 hours! So I'm going old school and getting yet another IIIc, and another 9500. What I'd LOVE to see is a Nokia communicator (office suite, keyboard, LOUD ring tones, external keypad, great camera) stuck together with a Palm IIIc (apps, great book selection, awesome external keyboard that's almost as small as the palm all folded up), and the G1 (GPS, barcode scanner, megaGeek appeal, music/movie player, decent internet). I fail to understand WHY there is not such a thing on the market. Palm could do it if they would make the screen easier to read (hey, I'm gettin' old) and a real keyboard, miniature for the phone but expandable to full-size so you can type by touch. And put a numeric keypad on it so you can dial without looking at the screen (or text without having to use 2 hands). ARE YOU LISTENING, PALM??!! Build me a perfect phone!
