Early Criterion Release of a great film

Great film, nice extras, transfer is OK- there is room for improvement here but that depends on the quality/ condition of source materials. I suspect it's the best they could do at the time (2001), but I'm sure it could be further cleaned up and sharpened using modern computer transfer techniques discovered since that time. Nonetheless, you can't keep a great film down and it doesn't disappoint!

  • What we really want in life

This post WWII production in black and white stars Wendy Hiller, a determined young woman who knows where she's going, she thinks. That is until she goes to Scotland intent on marrying a rich fiance in the Hebrides who is living in the house of the Laird who has rented it to him as all the people there are strapped for money but won't sell or move away. The production shows some real places which can still be visited, and to my mind shows the feeling of the Scottish countryside and character better than anything else I've ever seen. We never see the intended husband, but we do see some wonderful scenes full of humor. I definitely recommend this movie, not only is it a charming love story, it is also a piece that makes you want to visit the Scottish countryside and seek out such ...

  • Absolutely charming movie!

This is my favorite movie. It is a joy to watch, and the music that accompanies it is mesmerizing. Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey are perfect in their roles, and the supporting cast is equally delightful. This is a true classic!

  • Magnificent

One of the best British film made by The Archers, Emeric Pressberger and Michael Powell. The screenplay is considered by those in the business as perfect.
