    vivitar 285

a good looking old flash, it does work well on the auto preset power levels. however, the manual modes of full, half, quarter and one sixteenth power do not work as all these settings dump full power. I will be using this flash as a bounce flash with the yellow and red settings, which will still be quite useful, and good enough for a $22 flash.

  • Vivitar 285HV

Great Flash, great price. This is a very powerful and capable flash for the money. Build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but problems like weak foot can be easily fixed with an after market replacement. All in all it's easy to use, and not too heavy despite it's large size. It has a wide range of Auto settings, making it very useful today, even though the design goes back to the 1970's. One note, make sure that you pick up one with the HV designation (285HV) as these use a low sync voltage that is safe for most modern DSLRs.

  • Vivitar 285HV Flash

If you are looking for a Good Quality but Inexpensive flash for off camera lighting this is a great option. If you use a pocket Wizard remote transmitter and receiver you can situate a few of these with either hand held assistance or on stands to give more flash in alternate off camera locals. This flash does have some degree of power adjustments but it's not highly tunable like large Strobes or even Canon Flashes. A flash of this quality and under $100.00 per unit is a GREAT addition to any photographers kit and should be considered by everyone...

The first impresion of this flash is of a russian tank, its sturdy, good quality plastic has been used, the zoom head its mechanical(less circuitboard to go wrong),has full manual capability control from full power to 1/2;1/4;1/16 the 1/8 step is missing for some reason that eludes me, it also has audio comfirmation to let you know when the capacitors are at full charge and you can use the flash.
