About this product

Product Information

A British family drama with a Western flare, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS starts out as a chaotic comedy of familial dysfunction and then changes into an emotional tale of love and loss. At the story's core is a love triangle between Shirley (Shirley Henderson), her nerdy boyfriend Dek (Rhys Ifans), and the bad seed Jimmy (Robert Carlyle). Jimmy abandoned Shirley and her daughter Marlene (Finn Atkins) years ago, but has returned to win them back. A motley pseudo-family, Shirley, Dek, and Marlene live in the Midlands area of England. Next door, the outspoken Carol (Kathy Burke) lives with her cowboy husband Charlie (Ricky Tomlinson), and their two young sons, along with Carol's teenage daughter Donna (Kelly Thresher) and Donna's boyfriend Donut (Andrew Shim). Jimmy is Carol's selfish brother who slinks back into town with a gang of Scottish thugs in tow, throwing the whole group into flux. With some hilarious comedic interludes provided by the loveable Dek, and the humdrum yet happy lives of this makeshift family proving the power of togetherness, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS is an entertaining, at times heartrending family story from writer-director Shane Meadows.

  • One word: Don't!!!!!

Oh my goodness....where do I begin!! I thought this film would have promise...I love British based and produced films - particularly those produced by Film Four - think Four Weddings and a Funeral or Shallow grave, Furthermore this starred Robert Carlyle of Trainspotting and Full Monty Fame, Rhys Ifans of the Replacements and Twin Town, Ricky Tomlinson, Kathy Burke, all names I know and whose work I have enjoyed! This sounded good on all levels - even the premise of the film - Robert Carlyle is a petty criminal up to no good in his native Scotland, when he happens to watch a TV show where his former flame gets a marriage proposal - and promptly turns it down! He makes his way back to the Midlands and her home with the hope of winning her back!! In theory this is good guy verses bad guy ...

  • Not a comedy; sad people living drab lives

What a sad and unhappy bunch of people these are! I don't think other people's emotional pain is funny, and most of what happens here is about emotional pain. This is especially true of Dek, well acted by Rhys Ifans. Robert Carlyle plays his usual careless, obnoxious, unloveable drifter, and much of the action is poorly directed. It's a loser on all counts.

  • The other reviewers just don't get it.

People seem to have a very set view of what an English film ought to look like, and this view does not include "slice of life"- or even romantic comedy-types of films except perhaps for Bridget Jones. If this were an American film, it'd be praised to the skies for being an independent film if nothing else. This is not an independent film, actually, but its themes are those that an American independent film would usually tackle. One reviewer complained that the protagonists live drab lives, but this is EXACTLY the kind of film that the English produce; the glamorous and more commercial English films are NOT the only kinds of English films there are. (And by the way, these are mostly English, not merely British, films.) Onto the film itself, then... Robert Carlyle is always engaging. ...
