  • Road to Zanzibar: No Great Shakes

    As much as I have fond memories of the Road Pictures, I realized my view was based on their first, Singapore, and 3rd, Morocco; with 7 films in the "series", there were five I'd not yet seen. Zanzibar has none of the charm of the other 2-referenced films. It's too frantic, there are no chances for Bing or anyone else to shine with a great song, there's no love interest because neither Dorthy nor the other female lead is a symphathic character, and even the ad-lib banter of Hope and Crosby falls flat. I told myself I should enjoy it, and I wanted to, but even my wife agreed it was not one of their finer moments in film. Now I want to watch it again to give it a second chance!

In their second picture together, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby are funnier than ever, flinging insults and pursuing quick riches and Dorothy Lamour. This time, Bing and Bob, as Chuck and his yellow-bellied buddy Fearless, are two American sideshow performers in Africa. Bing handles the business matters, and Bob, unbeknownst to him, is left to brave the dangers. They're forced to flee when they accidentally burn down the carnival. Instead of buying two tickets back to the U.S., Bing spends all their dough on a diamond mine. Bob prompty sells the deed, and he and Bing take the money and head for another town.
