About this product

Product Information

"A Face in the Crowd" is a drama featuring Andy Griffith. The DVD has a run time of 125 minutes. It tells the story of Lonesome Rhodes, played by Andy Griffith, and his almost overnight rise to fame. Originally a relative nobody who sings for a living, he is noticed by a producer. Once Rhodes makes a television appearance, things begin to take off. Endorsements, fans, and sponsors are beating down his door for attention. In "A Face in the Crowd", Rhodes rides the wave for awhile, but then comes clean with an intimate crowd, spilling the true details of who he really is. He describes himself as a manipulator who has used everyone for his own personal gain. His ex-lover sets him up for ruin on his television show by leaving the microphones on during the closing credits. All of his fans hear him calling them nasty names and putting them down. "A Face in the Crowd" is a drama on DVD that is intended for mature audiences, due to the subject matter and some strong language.

One of my all-time favorite movies.

If you only know Andy Griffith from Mayberry or Matlock, you are in for a treat. This shows Andy's acting chops. It has been one of my all-time favorite flicks for a long time. In fact, I had the dvd before but I gave it to someone so they too could enjoy it. Highly recommend for any Andy Griffith fan.

  • A Face in the Crowd

Andy Griffith's first film. You get to see the other side of Andy Taylor - he ain't nice. He dominates the film. This is also Lee Remick's first film. I saw this on VHS and had to buy the DVD. The film was made in 1957 but rings true today. Andy shows you how to really sell Viagra and how to get presidents elected. It's funny, cruel, and sad. First time I watched it I couldn't take my eyes off it - didn't want to miss anything. Elia Kazan directed it - now I want to see more of his work. It's not rated, but it's not for kids. A very good film but I can't say it's excellent. If you can rent it first, rent it - it won't appeal to everyone.

  • One of the Greatest Movies Ever Made--My Number One

Andy Griffith is not the dependable Sheriff Taylor in this thrilling performance--He is absolutely wild and raw and sexy and on target as Larry Rhodes. You will recognize the great cast in standout performances as well,Patricia Neal, Lee Remick, James Franciosa and Walter Matthau. It is the story of the power of commercial television--how it sells everything from peanuts to politics. The hair on the back of my neck stood up at the end. There is great humor in this movie and Andy Griffith is just amazing as he moves from a jail cell with his beat up guitar to scarily familiar heights. In this election year it is the hottest movie ever! Love it now!

  • A Face in the Crowd is a Hidden Gem

This movie is a sleeper, not in the bad sense, but that it was so good for it's time (and still today), and that it is largely unknown and unappreciated. Andy Griffith is over the top in his dramatic performance, and I thought the movie was a bit long and scattered at times. Yet his solid performance supported by the Patricia Neal at her finest make the movie ultimately worthwhile. Walther Matthau, Anthony Franciosa and a very youg Lee Remick are all excellent as well in their early acting careers. I encourage the reader to do give it a try, and also stick around for the bonus material. There's some very interesting narrative about Elia Kazan and Budd Schulberg and Hollywood in the McCarthy era.

  • Great performance from one of the greatest actors in Hollywood.

As a Huge Andy Griffith fan, this movie, his first theratrical rekease should have been worthy of a mention for an Oscar. The complete role of a southern hilbilly from Kentucky is mesmorising. A complete change of character from good ole' Andy on the "Andy Griffith Show". I rellly enjoyed it and will watch it many times.
