About this product

Product Information

Art and religion are two words that have no equivalents in languages spoken by Native Americans. Yet these intensely spiritual people created objects for everyday use that are unsurpassed for sheer beauty, originality, and craftsmanship. The Spirit of Native America explains this apparent contradiction in language as rich in symbolism as the art itself. Stunning full-color photography augments the text, yielding a new perspective on this often misunderstood facet of Native American culture.

  • A good read, nice photographs of the collection.

The Spirit of Native America: Beauty and Mysticism in American Indian Art is a fine book that tackles one of the most alluring and yet elusive topics about Native American culture. The author catalogs the collection of artifacts housed at the Colter Bay Visitors Center of the Grand Teton National Park, presenting them in quality color photos, while discussing the significance behind the items. It can be difficult to express the personal meanings of these items to their creators. One of the greatest problems is the broad topic itself. It's difficult to sufficiently describe the mystical or spiritual meanings of items of any one particular tribe and in this book the author attempts to do so for several different tribes or regional divisions of Native Americans. As such, the reader ...

  • The spirit of Native America

Wonderful Native American Art book. Really a color picture book, but GREAT pictures ! My mind seems to wander to days gone by every time I view this book. 250 artifacts represented with text that places them in their proper tribal perspective.
