Necessary when TV has no analog output.
It does the job with no problems. Some new TV's have no analog audio outputs. I think it's a foolish omission since many people with vintage sound systems like to integrate their TV. Competitive forces can discourage purchase of those TV models which may otherwise be a perfect choice. Fortunately FiiO has the solution. I commend them for their foresight. It's a low cost solution that seems to be a good performer. I actually purchased the FiiO before the new TV knowing my choice had no analog audio jacks. I'm very pleased with the results. If your situation is the same, I highly recommend this.It does the job with no problems. Some new TV's have no analog audio outputs. This little box is beyond amazing. It will blow your mind the kind of sound quality it outputs. I don't know how it compares to top quality converters as I don't know what those sound like, and they are much more expensive but if you're first listening to HD audio with this converter, you will be under the impression that the sound quality just can't get any better! instruments don't get mudied up and remain separate, the high frequencies are so clear it makes you believe it's right in front of you, the bass is very well defined, no need to turn it up in any way, and you can hear a whole range more of overtones in music that aren't easy to hear with just CD quality, this is definitely an Audiophile's piece of technology!This little box is beyond amazing. Very helpful device
I had some trouble with the video-conferencing endpont RADvision (currently Avaya) Scopia XT1000. It does not have analog audio input and output (in order to connect casual speakers and microphones to this device). It has only Digital Coaxial RCA input and output. I have bought Digital-To-Analog and Analog-To-Digital converters to do the job. Both converters work fine.

Can finally hook the tv into my stereo
Most new TV's seen to have done away with the RCA audio line outputs. The only audio output on my TV is HDMI or Toslink fiberoptic. My speaker amp doesn't support these inputs. The Fiio d3 was the perfect solution allowing me to plug the d3 into the Toslink output and then d3 RCA outputs go to my amp. Sound is impressive for such a reasonably priced dac. Would definitely buy again!
