During the 1950's till his death in 1993, Walter Breen was one the most prolific numismatic researchers of his day. While other researchers such as Harry Bass and John Ford specialized in a particular series, Walter Breen was the first to attribute all coins by variety and his encyclopedia is a compendium of coin facts that is still used to this day as a baseline for other numismatic researchers. While some of Walter Breen's facts, such as estimated mintage and survival figures, have since turned out to be conjecture, his research has proved invaluable to the numismatic community. This book is an absolute "Must Have" for the most serious U.S. coin specialist. There are thousands of varieties and error coins that are not listed in any other complete reference in this work. All sorts of information concerning the mints and processes used to strike coins and the overall back story to United States Coin Production. This work is such a wealth of information, that after having owned it for more than twenty years, I can easily learn something new every day. This book was $100 new, twenty years ago, and today sells for twice that - and would still be a bargain at four times it's original issue price.This book is an absolute "Must Have" for the most serious U.S. coin specialist. This book goes into a lot of detail into early u.s. colonials and u.s. coins in general. It provides background information for each issue. And also provides the different die variety of each series. Definitely recommend!!
