About this product

Product Information

Nikon, the leader in precision optics, 35mm and digital imaging technology, offers the ultra-compact AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G lens. Compact and lightweight with a comfortable, well-balanced feel, this wide angle-to-portrait zoom lens is ideal for travel landscapes, scenic and general family photography. Excellent optical and mechanical performance in a very compact size was the design objective for this Nikkor lens. To achieve this, Nikon designers addressed several key design points. Using the latest computer aided techniques, the optical design was optimized for a balance of size, weight and image quality. Mechanical construction takes advantage of strong, yet lightweight materials that are resilient and good looking.Another key element considered in the design of the AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G was built-in aperture control, a feature on the newest Nikon SLR cameras, which does not require that the lens have an aperture ring. With this point in mind, Nikkor G lenses omit the aperture ring, resulting in a lens that's more compact and lighter. This approach offers photographers all of the advantages of Nikkor optics without loss of performance for their new Nikon SLR cameras. Picture-taking with the new lens will add excitement to any photographer's repertoire. Capturing beautiful portraits at 80mm and moving through normal to wide for landscapes and other wide view subjects provide dynamic range and enhance picture-taking opportunities. The AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G features one aspherical lens element with a high-performance Nikon Super Integrated Coating that delivers superior color reproduction, while minimizing ghost and flare. A rounded diaphragm opening with seven blades makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural and the aspherical lens element minimizes distortion, especially at the periphery area, for superior optical performance. Nikon's AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-4.5G lens is sure to become a valued addition to any photographer's bag.

"Better than it has any right to be"

Why the quotation marks? Because the great Ken Rockwell said it before I did. In fact, because of his review, I bought this lens - again and again and again. I sell cameras. This cheap little plastic body lens can be had on ebay for about $40 or so. It pairs very well with the Nikon D70, and it takes better pictures than any cheap little plastic bodied lens has a right to. The f/3.5-5.6 version is pretty good too, but not as good as this little gem. Buy one and enjoy it. One note of caution: This is an AF lens - it doesn´t have a motor built in, so you won´t get auto-focus if you have a D50, D60, D3000 series or D5000 series camera. If that´s your situation, there´s an easy solution. Put said camera up for sale on ebay and buy a D70, D80, D90, or D200 (one of the great bargains ...

  • Excellent cheap solution for mid-range Nikkor zoom for full-frame bodies

I bought this lens as a flexible and light landscape lens, after reading some very positive reviews about its image quality (though not its construction quality). I have been very happy with it -- when used at f8-f11, it produced very sharp images with lovely color rendition at short-middle focal lengths, with only some softness at 80mm. Results at f16 were also very acceptable. Given its widespread availability as a used lens, it was a bargain. I do not intend to use it heavily and have no need for the professional build quality of the comparable range Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, which would have cost 20x(!!) as much, with only marginally better image quality (using Nikon's own MTF charts), albeit a wider maximum aperture. The widest zoom setting is adequate for most landscapes (on a ...

  • Great little lens for the money spent!

This lens can't be beat for the money spent. Great pictures, fast auto focus, perfect lens to keep on your camera for most all occasions. Fairly fast for a lens of this type. Nikon knew what they were doing when they came up with this one. You can still find them for fairly cheap money today. The one I bought was almost like new, not a scratch on it. The seller said I would love this lens and he was right. If you are lucky enough to find one, don't pass it up. Money well spent. Sometimes Nikon can come up with lens that are heavy or overpriced, good at one end of the spectrum and not at the other. This lens is not one of them. Light on your camera, not overly large, and the quality of the photo's at all focal lengths are very good if not excellent. I still use film for most of ...

  • Good quality lens & picture quality. Feather-weight

I purchased this lens for my 14mp digital camera. I have a variety of lens from different companies and I needed this specific lens for a job. What I liked most about it -- the Nikon name and the clarity of the lens. The pictures came out sharp, with excellent detail level, contrast and colors. It is feather-weight and a good bargain for the price. My dislikes -- the casing is not metal but rather plastic. It just feels really cheap especially with it having the Nikon name. Could be more solid. There also is no aperture ring or distance markings on focus ring and the lens turns as it focuses. This could be a problem when using a polarizer.

  • great lens for a very reasonable price.

I bought my zoom lens for about $45 used. It is plastic but it is reasonably durable and very, very light for a zoom lens. it is a great walking around lens as it cover the most popular and needed zoom ranges. I specifically bought it for my F4s and it is a perfect match for that camera as It has a built in motor drive. The only downside to this lens is that it is not very fast, but for garden variety outdoor shooting or flash shooting it does a fantastic job. You pay a premium price for faster lenses so this lens is the one to get for the most bang for your buck.
