Based on the engrossing nonfiction work by Sebastian Junger about the Andrea Gail--a commercial swordfishing boat that was lost at sea in October 1991--Wolfgang Petersen's THE PERFECT STORM brings the pages to life. The movie features a big-name cast (George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg) playing the gruff, edgy fishermen in the Gloucester, Massachusetts, port, as well as close-up camera shots of the boats moored on the wintry docks. Viewers are drawn into the closely knit New England community that is struck speechless by a fierce nor'easter made from three merging hurricanes. Meteorologists call it the Perfect Storm.Despite the weather forecast, skipper Billy Tyne (Clooney) insists that his crew go out on one more 30-day swordfishing trip before the winter sets in. At sea, a series of tragedies ensues, including a man dragged overboard by one of the 300-foot-long lines and a bloodthirsty shark that gets reeled onto the deck accidentally. What's worse, the skipper's right-hand man, Bobby Shatford (Wahlberg), is homesick for his girlfriend back onshore. But it is not until the storm finally hits and the special effects--mountainous dark digitized waves--take hold that the Andrea Gail is rendered helpless even to Coast Guard helicopters and THE PERFECT STORM's terrifying true-story tragedy becomes reality.

    The Perfect Storm

    This is a movie that makes you ask yourself.....why? Why do people go through that much danger to make a living? The screenplay is okay, could use a bit more work. Relationships didn't have enough time to grow during the movie. A lot of time is spent on images of the boat and ocean. A lot of info crammed into a short period of time. The movie would have been better with more concentration on relationships between the men and their women, the men and their co-workers. Great Soundtrack! Great graphics. Good acting. Even better in HD/DVD.

    Amazing Cinematography

    A powerful film based on a true incident. Fishing boat captain Billy Tyne (George Clooney) has had a disappointing season and at season's end, he knows he and his crew can only make some decent money if they venture out further than they've ever gone before -- to the Flemish Cap -- in their boat, the Andrea Gail. Diane Lane plays another captain and Billy Tyne's closest friend. John C. Riley and Mark Wahlberg play two of the crew members on Tyne's boat. Amazing cinematography and special effects. Be sure to watch the bonus material on the DVD for more info on how the effects were accomplished. .

    The Perfect Storn HD DVD

    This movie was great on regular tv and we owned it on VHS. How can you not buy it for HD DVD. Looking forward to seeing it on flat screen with the HD. I love this movie. It's well written and well filmed. It has some amazing scenes, and with George Clooney, and Mark Wohlberg, as well as more in this great cast, it's definately worth owning.

    Good overall mvie.

    The movie has plenty of good special effects and that fact that it is based on a true story helps keep you watching. Good solid cast of actors and directing.

    Best movie ever

    I don't watch movies more than twice. I have watch this one over and over. I use this movie everytime I upgrade my system as a test of sound and picture.
