crazy, strange, but likeable
Sean Connery was already a superstar by the time he chose to take on the lead role in A fine madness. he had starred in 3 james bond movies and was a box office smash. A fine madness could not be more different to 007. perhaps thats why he did it. In it, he plays the part of a poet. He is a womaniser, a bum who cant stay in a job for long and a dreamer. His suffering with wife tries to look after him, but he has a terrible temper. He flies off the handle at the slightest thing and on top of that, he keeps trying to avoid the lawyers and police, who are after him for not paying alimony. and after that dark description, you will be amazed to hear that its a comedy. now despite the fact that this film is a low budget, manically written and sometimes bizarre movie. Discovering Connery
What's not to discover about an actor who is iconic for one roll? An actor who can stretch himself into many unknown rolls. Case in point; Connery, that's Sean Connery, the same one who made Bond, James Bond his own. I recall in the early days of my youth, when I was discovery the movies, and how I awed by Sean Connery's persona of James Bond. I did some research and found he had done other movies. My search lead me to Hitchcock's Marnie, but too young to understand it, recalled seeing Darby O'Gill and the Little People, but I felt I was now to old to enjoy. My search to see Connery in other roles was limited. Fortunately, Connery did not let me stop him, he went on to make other movies between his James Bond roll, and I would slowly discover them. Case in point: The Hill and A Fine ... What's not to discover about an actor who is iconic for one roll? An actor who can stretch himself into many unknown rolls. Case in point: The Hill and A Fine Madness. The former is a great dramatic roll for Connery. I took note. Then the later came out. It was first rate quirky, irreverent, funny and a above all satiric. I began to realize, Sean Connery was an excellent actor. Although, I enjoyed him in the Bond roles, I enjoyed the less seen roles he fleshed out. To me the, A Fine Madness, was the turning point in my discovering how good an actor Sean Connery was. Whenever it showed on TV, I would watch it. I would go to art house with friends, who had only seen Connery as Bond. But along this journey, I also discovered the magic of this film. It was based on a novel (that I searched, found and read); it taught about screen writing, as the novelist Elliot Baker, adapted his own novel. It has wonderful acting besides Sean Connery; yes Joanne Woodward plays an against foil to Connery; but what surprised me most (other than Connery), was the fine direction by Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back). Sean Connery would eventually leave the Bond roll during the 70s, and play other fine rolls. Each a little shift from his Bond persona, all most tough guys. Some had charm, some had pathos, and some would be fast cameos. Some directors would utilize his distinctive voice and other would milk his film persona. Connery would return to Bond roll one more time in the 80s, but his acting career would reach it's peak when he won the Oscar for the tough guy roll in The Untouchables. To me, however, his finest roll was in A Fine Madness. It is a complete movie, waiting to be discovered over and over again. It's story is more enduring than most of the other films, Connery has done in the past few years. It does hold the test of time. And just for the fun of it, where The Empires Strikes Back is a sequel to the first ever Star Wars film, A Fine Madness can be an indirect prequel to another fine roll for Connery, Finding Forrester. Enroute to becoming a big star, Connery took the long route. For the film goer, like me, each roll built on the other. Some times it was fast, and other times it took a detour. And when it took a detour, I found thing I had not seen before. Thanks to movies like A Fine Madness, I found movies other than James Bond (and the Saturday Afternoon fare, and ultimately, I found and was discovering Connery.
