About this product

Product Information

#1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George delivers an explosive, "absolutely riveting" novel (Entertainment Weekly) that delves into the events leading up to the shocking murder of Inspector Lynley's wife. The brutal, inexplicable death of Inspector Thomas Lynley's wife, Helen, has left Scotland Yard shocked and searching for answers. Even more horrifying is that the trigger was apparently pulled by a twelve-year-old boy. That story begins on the other side of London in rough North Kensington, where the three, mixed-race, virtually orphaned Campbell children are bounced first from their grandmother to their aunt. The oldest, fifteen-year-old Ness, is headed for trouble as fast as her high-heeled boots will take her. That leaves the middle child, Joel, to care for the youngest, Toby. No one wants to put it into words, but something clearly isn't right with Toby. Before long, there are signs that Joel himself has problems. A local gang starts harassing him and threatening his brother. To protect his family, Joel ends up making a pact with the devil--a move that leads straight to the front doorstep of Thomas Lynley. The anatomy of a murder, the story of a family in crisis, What Came Before He Shot Her is a powerful and emotional novel, full of deep psychological insights, that only the incomparable Elizabeth George could write.

  • What Came Before He Shot Her by Elizabeth George (2006)

What Came Before He Shot Her by Elizabeth George (2006) One of Her Best! Great Read. In North Kensington three orphaned mixed-race children are bounced from one home to another. The middle child Joel takes care of the youngest, Toby, who isn't quite right. When a local gang threatens Toby, Joel makes a pact with the devil that ends in the murder of Thomas Lynley's wife."--From source other than the Library of Congress This bleak bit of crime fiction from bestselling mystery author Elizabeth George focuses on the preternaturally doomed Joel Campbell, a pre-teen boy with a singularly awful home life who takes it upon himself to save everyone in his family. Salvation inevitably turns to disaster, and his psychotic mother, teenaged sister, and eight-year-old brother are no help as they stumble ...

  • Not a detective lynley book.

The worst Elizabeth George book. No detective Lynley. The characters are dark, sad and do not engage the reader. The endless descriptions of poverty and violence are trying... Mrs George can go on but usually to the good of a book. I can only say something pivital happens at the end which I just skipped to it was so hard to get through. Most reviews say the same...it's not just me. My advice, read a synopsis, forget this tiresome, turgid book.

  • unfair justice

I have never read an Elizabeth George novel before. I coudn't put his book down! It is the story of 12 year old Joel Campbell who is trying to keep his family together and protect his young slow witted brother. He gets beaten twice by the local bullies for his efforts. When his aunt Kendra tries to help by giving the bully's name to the cops things get worse. Joel's grades drop and takes desperate measures as he is stalked and chased by the bullies. I would like to know what happens to Joel. If he 'grasses' or if takes his lumps in jail. I cried at the end. You will too. Bill

  • IT IS NOT A MYSTERY - IT IS A SOCIAL CRUSADE.

i WAS SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED IN THIS BOOK. I LIKE GEORGE'S WRITING AND HER FAMILIARITY WITH SPECIAL ENGLISH WORDS WHICH IS GOOD SINCE THE SETTING OF THE BOOK IS IN ENGLAND. WHAT BOTHERED ME ABOUT IT IS THAT IT SEEMS TO TRY TO PORTRAY SOCIAL RACIAL CONDITIONS IN ENGLAND, KIND OF A BOOK ABOUT A CRUSADE. I WAS EXPECTING IT TO BE LIKE HER OTHER BOOKS - A DETECTIVE MYSTERY.
