About this product

Product Information

Chrysanthemum is a funny and honest school story about teasing, self-esteem, and acceptance to share all year round. Written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes, the nationally bestselling and celebrated creator of Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, Owen, and Kitten's First Full Moon, Chrysanthemum is a don't-miss classic, especially for back to school. Chrysanthemum thinks her name is absolutely perfect--until her first day of school. "You're named after a flower!" teases Victoria. "Let's smell her," says Jo. Chrysanthemum wilts. What will it take to make her blossom again? This popular picture book has sold more than a million copies and was named a Notable Book for Children by the American Library Association. "Perfectly executed in words and illustration, Chrysanthemum exemplifies Henkes's talent for creating true picture stories for young audiences."--The Horn Book This is an ideal break-the-ice book for the first week of school. It get children thinking about and bonding with their own names and the names of everyone else in the class, and it's the perfect vehicle for starting a discussion about treating classmates with tolerance, kindness, and compassion.

    Chrysanthemum Book

The item was in good condition and came right on time. I used the book last year for my second graders and wanted to add it to my collection for my current Special Education students. It is a great book with a great theme for young children. Tomorrow is storybook dress up day and I can't wait to carry my book in the parade and be Chrysanthemum. My kids will be excited so thanks!

The book appears in decent shape from the cover but the binding is old and upon first read I am losing pages.

  • A great book for kids with unusual names...

Kevin Henkes is a favorite children's book author in our house. He writes about things that so many preschool and elementary kids can relate to. In this book, adorable mouse Chrysanthemum is made fun of incessantly because of her unusual first name. When a popular teacher at school reveals that she, too, is named after a flower, the other kids suddenly wish their names were just like Chrysanthemum's. I have a special affection for this book, because I too have an unusual first name. I felt just like Chrysanthemum when I was younger. (Fortunately, as an adult, I'm "over" it. :) The emotions Chrysanthemum feels are very real to younger kids, and they squeal with delight as Chrysanthemum wins in the end! I actually use this book with my sixth grade language arts class. We talk about ...

  • Names Can't Hurt You!

thought this book would be great for my great-granddaughter who will be starting school next year. Right now she is in pre-school which will also be a tool for her if anything like this happens. Thought it was a great teaching but interesting book for small children. Plan on buying her some more from this author.

  • Very sweet little book & a "lesson" of sorts as well

I bought this book for my children and we have enjoyed reading it so much that we finally had to buy another copy. In this darling book a little girl (mouse) who has never known anything but self-confidence is ridiculed on the first day of school because of her seemingly unusual name. While the other girls have short, common names, Chrysanthemum's name is a not only a mouthful, it is the name of a flower...as children are wont to do, they tease Chrysanthemum about being a flower and she starts to lose her sense of self-worth and joy...But, as in real life, a few kind words can go a long way. I love that the book is a great teaching tool for little ones who might feel out of place or self-concious. The illustrations are sweet and the story is refreshing. Especially with the tremendous ...
