Bright and Fine
When purchasing these, I was looking for something to replicate a fairly old-fashioned incandescent light beside a wooden loading dock, a scene suggestive of the 1940s through, say, the 1960s. The simulated wooden poles look very good in such a scene, but the lights themselves, being LEDs, are far too bright, blue-white, and ultra modern in appearance. Even though advertised as being "warm white," the light they produce does not look appropriate for something mounted on an old wooden pole. As a modern light over an exit from an interstate highway, they'd be perfect, but then the wooden poles would be out of place. The wires are the finest (i.e., thinest) I've ever seen. If used with Woodland Scenics "Just Plug" system with its connectors, this is not a problem. In fact, the ultra-thin ... In fact, the ultra-thin wires are very easy to hide amidst scenery, and they are quite long so I don't believe a modeler would have any problem reaching a power source with them. However, if one wishes to shorten, splice, or otherwise modify the wiring, polish up the bifocals--and maybe the magnifying glass--first. I believe that the entire light head is an LED, the top being blocked by aluminum-color paint, because my lights had some small light leaks along the edges of the painted area, which could be fixed with a bit of touch-up paint. Not having the entire "Just Plug" system, I tested the lights with a battery pack first (3 Volts DC) and then with a Dept. 56 plug-in transformer designed to power that brand of street lights (4.5 Volts DC). The "Just Plug" lights worked fine with the batteries but pulsated with the 4.5 Volt source. I have no idea what DC voltage they are intended to work with since that information is nowhere to be found on the packaging or the manufacturer's website. In conclusion, I must say that the lights did not do for my purposes. However, if one is using the "Just Plug" system and doesn't mind the modern-looking light being emitted, these should work very well, and the poles do look very good with nice detail.
