        Before the Civil War and at a time when the human value of individual slaves and women were insignificant and hidden in plain view, the fact that quilts were used to secretly point the way to freedom, was incredible to learn about. The story of this craft of girls and women, the story of fabric pieces designed into not just a blanket providing warmth and comfort but of maps pointing north and away from slavery, was simple outstanding. The images and drawings of the many quilt designs used in this endeavor enhanced this story. I have donated this book to a school library - and I know that the story of these quilts, of colorful maps hidden in plain sight to those seeking freedom, will be loved and remembered.
