Pioneer SX-626 is a very nice vintage, early 70's, receiver. I was looking for something vintage for a bedroom system of 200 square ft. Spec is only 20wpc but from 5-80khz, s/n of 95 & damping of 40, this should put power at about 25wpc from 20-20k, some say 27wpc or so. This is more than enough power for bedroom system, especially with speakers of 90db or more efficiency. What I was really after was that warm, rich, open vintage, leaning toward tube like sound. The 626 excels at this, as the amplifier has capacitive coupled output, taking it away from the sterile & sometimes kind of harsh sound of direct coupled amps. It has pre-out main in's!! one feature that is not often found on smaller low & mid power receivers. This allows the use of the 626 as a preamp & ability to increase power ... I am using this output to feed a powered sub via RCA cables. The rest of the features are pretty standard for a receiver of this class, phono, aux, 2 tape monitor loops, etc. It does have high & low filters which I use in this bedroom system to "mellow" the sound for sleep-time listening. It has a very strong tuner, allowing for radio reception with the simplest antenna. I was also drawn to this early 70's line of Pioneers because of the mellow blue dial lighting/black dial face & all wood cabinet. I have used some of my monster 70's receivers in the bedroom & find, in addition to excessively unnecessary power, they have the white dial faces with rather bright amber lighting - not pleasant for sleep-time listening. Have not replaced capacitors or any other internal components nor have I measured offset, etc, as the sound is quite pleasurable for now as is. I have found with new caps & other components sometimes loose that tube like sound. All in all, I am very pleased with the SX626 for my current application. The other ones I have tried is the Marantz 2230, sound basically the same - also capacitive coupled amp. My SX-650 has white dialface/amber lights, too bright. I had my SX-434 in bedroom for very long time, needed a little more power & features. The Sx434 & 2230 have only one monitor loop, I am using the 2nd on the 626 to feed a surround processor for ocassional bedroom movie watching. Notes: Speaker outputs are the type that require adapter plugs, often missing & need to buy or make. Tuning meter backlight turns off when input control is switched off of tuner. Also not a fan of the style of the knobs, replaced oem knobs with a set off of a Pio SX-x3x series & use a large tuning knob in place of small volume control knob for easier & less touchy control of volume. Enjoy whatever Vintage receiver you choose, many great ones out there.

All junctions except high voltage are post and wire bond, bias was spot on, With a set of original Klipsch Heresy's 50% volume is all I need. It's a 46 year old receiver,100% original and still works like a champ, just deoxit some scratchy pots and it's like new and sounds wonderful. for a low wattage model it has pre-amp power amp jumpers, dual tape and phone inputs, Love the blue glass back-light display.All junctions except high voltage are post and wire bond, bias was spot on, With a set of original Klipsch Heresy's 50% volume is all I need.
