    Stylish, too stylish for me

    I'm a fan of straight forward writing that tells a story. Within that framework there's plenty of opportunity for all the literary devices writers love to use. This book gets bogged down in a lot of descriptions and dialogue that don't make a lot of sense if you weren't there. You might read half a page with only a vague idea of what is going on before you get to a section that is more straightforward. Add to that the relatively tiresome recitation of tactical maneuvers and you're left slogging through a lot of dead space to get to the good stuff. I know this book is acclaimed as the definitive work on the Vietnam war but maybe less so for those of us who weren't there. I've read a couple other books on the war and enjoyed them more.

    Absolutely the Best Account of Vietnam

    A very personal account of Herr's time in Vietnam, bringing back the insanity and stupidity of the war and all of its sadness and tragedy. It is correctly described as one of the greatest accounts of the war or any war yet written - what were we thinking?
