Seller Notes: “Good to Very Good overall vint cond:The carving on this very unusual mid-20th cent hand carved & ... “Good to Very Good overall vint cond:The carving on this very unusual mid-20th cent hand carved & hand painted Nigerian Ibibio wooden monkey mask, is very 3-dimensional, plastic & aggressive, giving the monkey mask bulbous, exaggerated forms, which emphasize the mystery & near human qualities of the African monkey, w/charcoal black hair that resembles more of a helmet. The yellow ochre w/burnt sienna painted face, are mottled & look to be modeled, sanded or scraped down, exposing the white gesso underpainting. The matte charcoal black of the hair doesn't demonstrate this same treatment, which makes the treatment of the face intentional & not any sort of unintentional damage. The eyes are wide open & only punctuated by holes, which act as the eye's iris's, allowing the monkey to look back at the viewer & also to allow the wearer of the mask to see through it. The top of the head looks natural but the bottom seems to be an engorged lower jaw or throat. Intriguing, surprising & terrific”
