About this product

Product Information

Take aim and fire in "Super R-Type" for the Super Nintendo console. This shoot-em-up video game was released in 1991 and was developed and published by Irem. The Nintendo game's story is simple: The evil Bydo Empire has invaded, and it's your job to destroy them. Armed only with your ship, the experimental R-9, you'll traverse a variety of levels. "Super R-Type" for the Super Nintendo supports a single-player mode. In "Super R-Type," the screen will automatically scroll horizontally from left to right. You can position the ship anywhere on the screen to avoid enemies and bullets. In addition to the enemies, you will also need to avoid obstacles, including walls. If your ship touches anything, whether it is a bullet or a wall, it is game over. Once you lose a life, you are taken back to the beginning of the level to start over. "Super R-Type" is known for its challenging difficulty, as the screen will fill up with bullets and obstacles quickly. This Nintendo game can be completed in an hour by a seasoned veteran who knows what to expect, but it could take 15 to 20 hours or more to get to that point for beginners. While challenging, "Super R-Type" is also rewarding because its game mechanics and graphics will ensure you want to keep playing.Your ship is packed full of weapons to help you destroy the Bydo Empire. While you start off with a standard gun that shoots forward, you can swap out to five other powerful weapons. These weapons appear at random spots during the gameplay, and touching them will automatically add them to your ship. The color of the item determines which weapon you get. The red item is a counter-air laser, used for destroying enemies above you. The blue item is the rebound laser, a weapon that will bounce off walls. The yellow item lets you fire a powerful shot that will destroy anything on the ceiling or floor. If you want to destroy everything on the screen, grab the green item. This weapon fires eight bullets in a spread pattern in front of you. There is also the gray weapon that functions similar to a shotgun. The R-9 in "Super R-Type" for the SNES also has two additional weapons at its disposal: Bits and the Force. The Force is a giant spherical item next to your ship that is always present and can be positioned either in front of or behind your ship to absorb shots. The Bits fire additional weapons, letting you effectively double or triple your firepower. You'll need to master all of these weapons to defeat all seven stages. Four of these stages were taken from the "R-Type II" arcade game, while the remaining three stages were created specifically for "Super R-Type" for the SNES. "Super R-Type" for the SNES has no official rating but is appropriate for all ages. If you are looking for a challenging SNES game with lots of replay potential, then you'll enjoy "Super R-Type."

    Great, but not fantastic

Super R-Type is a great remake of R-Type II with awesome graphics, but the usual slowdown of SNES shooters. iRem evidently didn't know how to really leverage the hardware yet, and it shows, but it's still a fun time if you can deal with slowdown.

  • It's pretty fun, as long as you swallow your pride and play on novice.

The concept of the helper ship is pretty cool, but it does take some getting used to. Took me a while to drill it into my head that the little part with the wimpy guns is me and I need to make sure THAT part doesnt get hit, and stop paying attention to the big part. There is slowdown throughout the entire game, so much that you start thinking that is the normal speed. Having no checkpoints, including before the bosses, makes it extremely difficult for the casual gamer. You might need to play through the level a couple of times before you learn the boss's moves and stop getting killed. If you play on the easiest mode (novice), you get to keep your guns when you die. I managed to beat it that way. Gave up halfway through on "easy". Cant even imagine the other modes. A couple levels ...

  • Overall a great space shooter that is a must have for a SNES collection!

I played R-Type on a GameBoy long ago as a small kid, I loved it A LOT and was addicted to the awesome space shooter. But soon I lost the game (cause I'm that type of kid) and later in my young life I started to miss it. But years later now since I'm 15 I found out it was on a SNES, considering the fact I had one I bought it on Ebay and my god ITS AWESOME. PROS: Its just like how I remember it but BETTER since its on TV, colored, and awesome sound. Its a great addicting side scrolling shoot-em-up alien and spaceships. Awesome power-ups that really help you mow the incoming aliens, hundreds of different type of aliens, a true classic to play. Unlimited CONTINUES! CONS: This game is just how I remember it, awesome but hard as HELL! Hit once you die, like every other shooter, but the enemy ...

  • Great game!

  • R-Type is a must own classic!

Great graphics and game play, I don't like that you start from the beginning when you die, but other than that, awesome!
