Ok so this item worked. But I had to reconstruct it a bit to fit my boat steering teeth. It would not fit in the space. But all goodπŸ‘

    What a difference!

I replaced the steering cable on my 99 OMC Javelin ski and fish 17' boat with a 115hp Johnson outboard. Ever since I purchased the boat in the spring of 2016, it was difficult to steer. I was told by several experienced boaters that it was normal to have tight steering on a boat that can reach speeds of 40mph on plane. Finally this spring, on the second trip out, the steering would not go to the left (port) without exerting so much force of the steering wheel that you could hear and feel the stress on the fiberglass dashboard. Once I got the boat home, I greased ever fitting I could find and attempted to loosen the steering with no luck. I finally lifted the outboard of the transom and disconnected the steering cable and it was just as hard to steer as it was when connected. I removed the ...

  • Exact replacement, easier install than I had hoped.

I started this by attempting to free up my old binding steering cable. I thought it would be more expensive and more work to replace, or I would not have bothered. One pin at the steering tiller on the outdrive, one nut at the tube that anchors the outer casing to the transom, and four screws at the rack & pinion under the dash, and out it comes. It even includes a new rack.
