Das Gehäuse des iPod nano 3 besteht aus eloxiertem Aluminium und poliertem Edelstahl, was zu seiner Robustheit beiträgt. Auf dem 2 Zoll großen Display mit einer Auflösung von 204 ppi können selbst Videos wiedergegeben werden. Das Bild ist um 65 Prozent heller als bei dem Vorgängermodell, sodass die Anzeige auch bei schwierigen Lichtverhältnissen besser erkennbar ist. Einige Funktionen erleichtern den Umgang mit dem Apple iPod nano. Dazu gehören Cover Flow, womit sich Musikliebhaber durch Albumcover klicken können, und die Zufallswiedergabe-Option. Für eine einfache Bedienung sorgt das Click Wheel, mit dem beim Apple MP3-Player die Lautstärke verändert sowie navigiert und geblättert wird.
