After returning home from World War I, James Allen, played to the teeth by theater veteran Paul Muni, dreams of becoming an engineeer but instead can only find employment in a shoe factory. After leaving this job, Allen becomes a penniless vagabond, unable even to hawk his war medals. But when Allen witnesses another man commit a crime, he is mistakenly committed to 10 years on a Georgia chain gang, where he is cruelly beaten by the sadistic guards. With the help of a fellow inmate, Allen escapes to pursue his dream of becoming an engineer. Unfortunately, the awful past lies in wait, preparing to return Allen to misery. I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG was one of the first talkies to foment for social change and justice. At the same time, the purity of the script and the actors' performances give it a place among the most depressing films ever made. In spite of its dour message, the film was a huge box-office success, won an Oscar for Best Picture, and continues to be revered to this day.

Real Nitty-Gritty, Depression Era Stuff
This one's a real old-timer. A very interesting, Depression era, movie that exposes the corruption and cruelty of the southern chain-gangs. It's got a gritty realism that was uncommon in the Hollywood fare of the 1930's. Definitely a cut above most of the drivel they churned out during that era. It's a movie for the serious movie buff.

One indiviual's struggle against abusive state authority.
This film is a dramatic depiction of an authoritarian culture (post WWI Georgia's prison system) and its destructive impact on individuals. Based somewhat loosely on a true story, the film follows the fortunes of a war veteran who, not content to return to his pre-war existence, struggles to make a better life for himself as a construction engineer. Played a patsy by a thief, our protagonist is convicted of abetting in a robbery and shooting. He is sentenced to the Georgia State Prison farm system, where he suffers crushing abuse by the prison staff and, subsequently, by state authorities. The setting and theme are similar to those of "Cool Hand Luke", produced some 35 years later. Paul Muni plays the lead role extremely well, and this would become one of his best ... This film is a dramatic depiction of an authoritarian culture (post WWI Georgia's prison system) and its destructive impact on individuals. Great Movie- My All-time favorite
This is my all-time favorite movie. It was the first movie (1932) to deal with social issues (Chain Gang cruelty in Georgia). It is an old movie in black and white. It was up for best picture but didn't win. I believe the director and producer were banned from ever going to Georgia. The movie is a true story based on a book written by the lead character. I don't want to say too much about it but I think if you can stomach the cruelty... you will enjoy it...This is my all-time favorite movie. This movie is a great classic and fits well with my collection of favorites
I originally was looking for a movie that I had seen called "The man who broke a thousand chains". I watched this movie a long time ago and fell in love with it. So in searching for it, I stumbled upon this movie " I am a fugitive from a chaingang". Obdurate not know that this was the original story to the movie I had seen. When I found out that the movie I wanted was too expensive at the time. I opted to buy the original one just to see what it was like. Plus it was more in my price range. I actually really enjoyed the movie. It made me appreciate the remake even more. HIGHLY SUSPENSEFUL AND ENGAGING!!
This story is unbelievable...the treachery and abuse!! Paul Muni shows off his great acting ability once again. I highly recommend this movie as one of the best oldies around!
