How to Avoid Problems with Behringer UCG102

FOR PCs - Here is the deal with the Behringer UCG102. I first bought one about mid to late 2000s and they are fantastic. That said, a lot changes, especially with computer software, in a relatively short time. If you buy this in or after 2018, first thing to do is throw out the included software (unless you still live in the XP era). Go to the Behringer website and search for the updated drivers (first search UCG102 and then click the "support" link on the page). Download and install. Next, go to the Native Instruments website and download the free trial size Guitar Rig 5 (it will do the same as what comes with this unit). The hardest part is flipping the right switches afterward. With the UCG102 plugged in via the USB port, open Guitar Rig 5. You should first get a box called "Audio and ...

  • Top critical review

It works. With the correct driver and configuration. This is where it gets icky....

Google this product and most of the reviews note that once you get the drivers properly installed and configured properly, it actually does work. The problem is that it could literally take hours to do this. I honestly can't tell you how I finally got it working. I became frustrated and randomly started messing with settings I didn't understand, and it started working. I was never able to achieve zero latency, but I was able to reduce it significantly. If you're a PC expert or love ripping your hair out in frustration to save a few bucks, by all means, purchase this. Otherwise, opt for the more costly products that will likely work nicely without sending you to a counselor.

  • UGC102 Works with linux

If you want to connect your guitar to a PC and want to use open source software such as Guitarix buy this product. To get sound you have to configure JACK and this unit automatically detected by linux kernel and all drivers work without any installation or configuration. I have tested with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

  • Elegant little interface

THe Behringer Guitar/USB Interface is a simple, elegant little product that does its job very well. It has surprisingly low latency for an analog-to-USB converter. tI replaces my old Alesis converter which had terrible latency that made it unusable. I run the digitized signal through the Guitarix amplifier emulator on a Linux workstation and record rhythm tracks with it. Linux audio has come a long way in recent years and the Behringer Guitar Link is a great little interface for this.
