I love this film and wanted to own it. It's a coming of age story with a sinister side. River Phoenix in a prize winning role.

This is a really first class movie and one that is worth seeing more than once. An especially poignant performance was given by the late River Phoenix as a teenager caught in the continuing saga of a family on the run from the law. It is a story of a family trying desperately to stay together, regretting deeply a crime committed by the parents when they were young and idealistic--a protest against the Viet Nam War that got out of hand and made them fugitives. River's role showcases his sensitive side--a boy of 17 who is talented and has the potential to go to Juillard to study piano, but is slated to live in the shadows because of his parent's crimes. A great performance was also given by Martha Plimpton, as River's girlfriend (She was his girlfriend at that time in real life)---A haunting ... Antiwar activists, Laiti and Hirsch blew up a napalm lab in 1971..they became fugitives. They run from state to state trying to stay one step ahead of the law. The eldest son, River Phoenix wants to stop running and put down roots. He is running from a past that is not his own and each "change" in his life brings more hardship and heartache. He makes the decision to "stay" while his parents have to run....bittersweet... knowing he can never contact his family again. I have loved this film for a long time.
When I first saw this film YEARS ago on TV, I enjoyed it tremendously. It deals with the inevitable break which occurs between teenagers and their parents. In this case, the family bond is exceptionally strong, but the break must take place. The struggle by the main character played beautifully by River Phoenix makes one relive those years and all of the emotions of that phase of life. Also, first love is portrayed in all of its strong emotions and confusion. It's a keeper!When I first saw this film YEARS ago on TV, I enjoyed it tremendously.
