Anyone who grew up in Southern California will talk with both nostalgia and frustration about the periodic summers of drought in which the oppressive heat is exacerbated by a shortage of its antidote--fresh water. In 1975, a clan of scruffy, rebellious teens found a way to turn this dearth to their advantage, using the sloping bowl of empty suburban swimming pools to create a new underground sport--skateboarding. The development, explosion, and corporate co-opting of this now ubiquitous sport was the subject of Stacy Peralta's acclaimed 2002 documentary, DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS. Peralta, one of the original skaters who came to be known as the "Z-Boys," has penned this dramatized account of his own story, a kinetic and gripping tale with dramatic turns reflective of the extreme crests and falls of those concrete waves.When a shipment of polyurethane wheels arrives at Venice Beach's Zephyr surf shop, the proprietor, Skip (Heath Ledger), puts together a team of roughly a dozen local layabouts to try his new idea. At lightning speed, the three most talented become international stars, infusing sexuality, danger, and punk rock into a sport formerly associated with kneesocks and lite pop. LORDS OF DOGTOWN principally follows these three as they deal with sudden fame and fortune. Stacy (John Robinson) is the elegant, responsible beauty. Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) is a frizzy-haired heartthrob with an overblown ego and penchant for pugilism. And Jay (Emile Hirsch), arguably the most compelling of the leads, supports his drug-addicted mother and is too cynical to be lured by the temptations of corporate vultures. Director Catherine Hardwicke, who fused gritty documentary techniques and high teen drama to great acclaim in her first feature, THIRTEEN, perfects that style here.     Skateboard Heaven!

    This was an unexpected plot and it was a true story. I hadn't done much research into this before ordering it. I bought it quite truthfully because of the Ledger name and wanting to complete my collection of his films shortly after his death. This one you would not recognize Heath at all if it weren't for his distinctive voice. I had to constantly remind myself that he was in this film he was well blended into the cast of characters. Perhaps this role was too easy for him and he fit too well into the collective. I enjoyed watching the outcome even though there were parts that made an old 60's freak a little too uncomfortable. Depicted life in the era in southern Calif. days well. I will have to watch it again for sure to see what I may have overlooked the first time. It was funny, ...

    Gritty Coming of Age Story!!!

    Good story about what success can do to friends and how each handles it. Worth viewing once even if you are not a skateboard or surf fan. Has a lot of moments and situations that make you can relate to. Be careful to keep this away from the kids for drug use situations and sexual content. Feels real and gritty. Check it out. Probably a rental for most. 3.5/5

    Lords of Dogtown - Lots of Fun, Heath Ledger was Great I didn't actually expect much from Lords of Dogtown, but I will say that - in addition to clearly exceeding my expectations! - it was a lot of fun and very entertaining. I'm not much of a skate boarding fan... but the story was exciting, the soundtrack was outstanding, and the acting - behind Heath Ledger who is almost unrecognizable - was excellent. Also importantly - Nikki Reed is in Lords of Dogtown (also of Thirteen) and is quite easy to watch. Cast & Characters John Robinson .... Stacy Emile Hirsch .... Jay Rebecca De Mornay ....     Explains the Origins All Extreme Sports

    Hollywood's version of a point in history about a group of young people who become the cutting-edge of the skateboard revolution. This was actually the birth of all "Extreme Sports". Nonimally acurate and infinately entertaining. Heart-touching evolution of friendships with an ending that will bring a tear to you eyes. As "Skip", this is the role that quite possibly started Heath Ledger's rise to super-star status. If your a member of "Generation Jones" as I am... This movie is a MUST own!
