About this product

Product Information

Bestselling author Jeffrey Toobin takes you into the chambers of the most important-and secret-legal body in our country, the Supreme Court, and reveals the complex dynamic among the nine people who decide the law of the land. Just in time for the 2008 presidential election-where the future of the Court will be at stake-Toobin reveals an institution at a moment of transition, when decades of conservative disgust with the Court have finally produced a conservative majority, with major changes in store on such issues as abortion, civil rights, presidential power, and church-state relations. Based on exclusive interviews with justices themselves, The Nine tells the story of the Court through personalities-from Anthony Kennedy's overwhelming sense of self-importance to Clarence Thomas's well-tended grievances against his critics to David Souter's odd nineteenth-century lifestyle. There is also, for the first time, the full behind-the-scenes story of Bush v. Gore -and Sandra Day O'Connor's fateful breach with George W. Bush, the president she helped place in office. The Nine is the book bestselling author Jeffrey Toobin was born to write. A CNN senior legal analyst and New Yorker staff writer, no one is more superbly qualified to profile the nine justices.

  • The Third Branch HARDCOVER 2007

This book is a well written and well documented look at our Supreme Court's decision making process. The Justices' and the many people who work with them have provided an important insight into the workings of this often overlooked, but equally powerful, third branch of our government. This was an interesting book, with fascinating behind-the-scenes look at a process that all Americans should know much more about because it effects all our lives. I read the book, not because this is the kind of books I read, but I wanted to know more about what is happening in our government....I wanted to be more aware, so sometimes I have to put down my cozies and thrillers and real the real mysteries that surround us in our government. Mr.Toobin held my interest and taught me a lot. A book we should ...

  • Supreme Court History

Jeffrey Tobin takes the reader on a journey through the secret life of the Supreme Court. The book is clearly assisted by Sandra Day O'Connor as her take on everything is clearly adopted by Jeffrey Tobin. Nonetheless, the recent history of the "Nine" is elegantly protrayed through major cases that allow the lay reader to understand the heart of the matters involved, politically and substantively. At time the substantive discussions of case law are very overbroad and sweeping from a lawyers standpoint, but the book is likely intended for non-lawyers. More history of the early "Nine" would have been a nice addition as well (I.e. More about the Warren Court). Overall a good book. I recommend it. Paul Farahvar

  • I am just fascinated by Jeffrey Toobin.

I am just fascinated by Jeffrey Toobin to writing. It’s a little overwhelming though because it’s 100% about the Supreme Court. But that’s why I bought it

  • Great book

Super interesting especially in light of the upcoming confirmation hearings. We don't hear much about these fascinating people. Toobin has the scoop on them.
