About this product

Product Information

A complex plot and a noirish feel characterize this exciting Western, which takes place in part during a flashback from contemporary 1948. The tale centers on the legendary Lost Dutchman mine, worth $20 million and notorious for its apparent curse upon all those who attempt to claim it. The grandson of Jacob "Dutch" Waltz, who discovered it, sets out to relocate the mine, and the story travels back in time to follow Dutch (Glenn Ford, SUPERMAN) in his initial explorations. A wealthy prospector who has acquired his money by dubious means shows up in town with 297 pounds of gold ore to trade for cash. He cases a furor and attracts the attention of one Julia Thomas (Ida Lupino, ROAD HOUSE), a bakery owner who immediately undertakes the foreigner's seduction. Dutch and Julia court one another, and the gruff Dutch's loneliness and vulnerability come to the fore in some surprising, touching, and well-acted, scenes; this leads up to an explosive denouement when Dutch learns of Julia's duplicity and true motivations.

Good story of the lost Dutchman mine

LUST FOR GOLD is the perfect title. Just about everyone searching for the gold becomes so obsessed that they lie, steal, cheat on their spouses, and/or commit murder. Part of the story is set in the present (1949) and part in the 1880s. The body count is high, but bloodless; everyone dies instantly, rather than lingering in agony for hours after being shot. The film would be more suspenseful without some of the voiceover; for example, as a rattlesnake strikes a character, his voiceover reassures the audience, "I was afraid I'd been bitten, but I hadn't." Fans of 1960s and 1970s television shows will have fun spotting familiar faces in small roles: Uncle Joe from PETTICOAT JUNCTION, Tonto from THE LONE RANGER, Dr. Bellows from I DREAM OF JEANNIE, and Grandpa from THE WALTONS.

  • My review for Lust for Gold originally released 1949

It has taken me 58 years to see this film in its entirety. When this motion picture first came out, I arrived at the theater midway through the film. However, I didn't realize that this was the last showing at this theater, and that this film would not be repeated for the early evening show. Which meant I only got to see less than the last half of this movie. I have always have a strong interest in the superstition Mountains, I had acquired quite a library of books, stories and maps, relating to the lost Dutchman mine, and the superstition Mountains. I would collect and file any and all information regarding this so-called Lost Mine. So when I saw it was released and reformatted by Sony into a DVD, I could not wait to order a copy. My expectations were more than satisfied. The ...

  • Dark and intriguing

This is an intriguing western that goes to some dark places as greed and desire lead the characters to, potentially, fatal consequences. It reminded me of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, but has enough distinctive qualities to stand out as an above-average noir-western movie.

  • Gold fields

The only reason this Movie isn't a Giant Hit is that it is in black and white. A lot of you younger folks have never seen Ida Lupino, Gig Young, William Prince or Edgar Buchanan in a movie. These actors were contract studio actors and appeared in lots of roles in the forties, fifties, sixties. Glen Ford and Ida Lupino were Stars During those wonderful years. When Hollywood was at its very best. Even a "B" movie like this one had performances that were Oscar quality. The contract actors could slide into any part and make you believe they were the the people they portrayed. This art is lost in todays films. "Lust for Gold" is the true story of the Lost Dutchman gold mine in Arizona's Superstition Mountains. Hundreds of people have spent years and fortunes trying to relocate it since the end ...

  • Lust for Gold DVD

The Movie was very interesting in that it was shot on location. Glenn Ford filled the role as the old dutchman well..It had the typical Hollywood flare of intrigue and some surprizes at the end. Over all Lust for Gold gives you a perspective of what you could expect if you went venturing out in the Superstitution mountains, in search of the lost mine...
