A historical tragedy in five acts performed in London in 1592-93 and was published in 1597 in a quarto edition reconstructed from an actor's promptbook, Richard III begins where Henry VI left off, and completes the action of the four-play series. Richard III was the first of Shakespeare's history plays to have a self-contained narrative unity. In it, Shakespeare emphasized the moment of death as a crisis of conscience in which the individual is capable of great clarity. Richard's evil character, which had already begun to emerge in the last of the Henry VI plays, now stands fully revealed. His opening soliloquy is an ironic mockery of recent events. An end to the Yorkist-Lancastrian hostilities has come at last, but we know Richard too well to expect that a peace dominated by genius of evil can bring any lasting reconciliation yet. England must still pay the full price of her disobedience to God's will.
