About this product

Product Information

Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow) never wanted to leave New York, but the lure of paying off his medical school bills by working in a remote area seems too good to pass up. However, the quirky citizens and sheer inconvenience of small town Alaska have him pining for the next flight back to Manhattan. Though Joel grudgingly stays, it takes him a while to warm to the climate and the people. Between the town's feisty mayor/pilot Maggie (Janine Turner), ex-NASA astronaut turned pompous millionaire Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin), and problems adjusting to the cycles of the sun, the weather, and everything else about the wild country, each episode provides a wealth of rich character studies and complex, universally appealing humor. This program contains the complete first season of the series.

  • Good series

Whether it's a snowy nude sprint down Main Street, the mysterious appearance of a long-lost relative, or the improbable death of yet another of Maggie's boyfriends, life's never dull in the remote hamlet of Cicely, Alaska. Colorful characters and quirky plots propelled Northern Exposure into the hearts of millions of viewers, earning the CBS "dramedy" series seven Emmy awards between its 1990 debut and its demise six seasons later. In season 1, we meet Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), an urban New York yuppie who consents to four years of rural servitude after Alaska pays his medical-school tuition. Joel's fish-out-of-water adventures drive the show, but it's the quirky ensemble of characters--Chris, the DJ/philosopher (John Corbett), Holling, the bartender (John Cullum), Maurice, the ...

  • Christopher Lee Rhyne Review 100

Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow) went from New York to Alaska (wacky town of citizens) town friends include Mayor/pilot Maggie (Janine Turner) & Ex-NASA Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin). Joel likes bagels but the local general store never even heard of bagels. Cicely 215 citizens & KBHR 57AM is the only media entertainment. Marilyn Whirlwind (Elaine Miles), Holling Vincouer (John Cullum) local bar keeper and Shelly Tambo (Cynthia Geary) will encounter everyday events. And then there’s Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner), Joel's landlady, Rick (Grant Goodeve) and Elaine (Jessica Lundy) Joel's girlfriend. Northern Exposure an eight-episode hit CBS in 1990. Northern Exposure filmed onset in Washington not Alaska as some think. DVD CAST----- Rob Morrow----- Barry ...

  • Northern Exposure -- great comedy

This comedy introduces Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow), a new doctor from the city with all its diversity of activities, to Cicely, Alaska (a small town with a population of only 214). With a complete cast of kookie characters in their everyday adventures, it makes for a great comedy. It kinda goes down slow and easy. Enjoyable without a lot of stress. From coping with a small town everyone-knows-your-business situation to his girlfriend being so far away for the next four years, Joel grows up a lot and learns how to just chill (eventually). I loved it on TV and it’s been great to re-visit with the characters I enjoyed so much!

  • Exposed again

I loved the series when it aired in 1990 and its messages are timeless. I feel it still stands up today. A fish-out-of-water story, it's comical, but not sitcom, drama without shock value. The characters are off-beat, community centered, philosophical and spiritually enlightening. Even the town is a delightful character. I felt like the main character, seeing everything for the first time and gradually finding a corner for myself. I do wish there were more behind the scenes extras, but this was done back when DVD's were only a thought. The deleted scenes were merely extended versions of ones that existed.
