About this product

Product Information

The most famous and controversial novel from one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century tells the story of Humbert Humbert's obsessive, devouring, and doomed passion for the nymphet Dolores Haze. "The conjunction of a sense of humor with a sense of horror [results in] satire of a very special kind." -- The New Yorker One of The Atlantic 's Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years Awe and exhilaration--along with heartbreak and mordant wit--abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America. Most of all, it is a meditation on love--love as outrage and hallucination, madness and transformation.

"The only convincing love story of our century." - Vanity Fair " Lolita blazes with a perversity of a most original kind. For Mr. Nabokov has distilled from his shocking material hundred-proof intellectual farce… Lolita seems an assertion of the power of the comic spirit to wrest delight and truth from the most outlandish materials. It is one of the funniest serious novels I have ever read; and the vision of its abominable hero, who never deludes or excuses himself, brings into grotesque relief the cant, the vulgarity, and the hypocritical conventions that pervade the human comedy." - Atlantic Monthly "Intensely lyrical and wildly funny." - Time "The conjunction of a sense of humor with a sense of horror [results in] satire of a very special kind, in which vice or folly is regarded not so much with scorn as with profound dismay and a measure of tragic sympathy…The reciprocal flow of irony gives to both the characters and their surroundings the peculiar intensity of significance that attends the highest art." - The New Yorker " Lolita is an authentic work of art which compels our immediate response and serious reflectiona revealing and indispensable comedy of horrors." - San Francisco Chronicle From the Hardcover edition., "The only convincing love story of our century." -Vanity Fair "Lolitablazes with a perversity of a most original kind. Controversial subject; excellent prose.

It is admirable that Nabokov, who was born and raised in Russia, had mastered the English language to the point of being favorably compared to our best and brightest.writers. Though the subject is morally debatable, the story can serve as a priceless lesson regarding the perils of emotional attachments and involvements between middle-aged men and teenage "nymphettes".

  • A masterful job of writing and a transcendent reading experience.

This is a marvelous novel. It is absolutely one of the best-written books I have ever read. Nabakov does an amazing job of writing about a very delicate subject with grace and sensitivity. He is an absolute master of the English language, which is truly amazing when you consider that he learned Russian and French first. Take your time with this one and it will reward you with an amazingly subtle and beautiful reading experience. If you have a chance to pick up an annotated edition, that is the best choice. I made constant use of a dictionary and a translation app on my iPhone as I read the edition without annotation.

  • Not just for college English courses.

Hilarious! This classic has been entertaining discerning readers for over 60 years.

  • Perfect… but

They highlighted in pink all the nasty parts. Some stray pen marks too. Eh, whatever. At least they didn't read the second half of the book. Timely shipping, very reasonable price, flashy packaging :)

  • Just a warning

The cover shown is not the cover that arrived with the book I received. It’s still a good book, just not the same edition. A little water damage that wasn’t described as well.
