About this product

Product Information

Based on actual events in 1838, AMISTAD is the story of captured African slaves who took over their transport ship in a bloody revolt with the hopes of returning back to their homeland. After the slaves are caught and imprisoned, their leader, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou), unable to understand the language or court system of America, tries to communicate his desire to return home to his defense lawyer, Roger Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), and former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman). The men plead for help with their groundbreaking court case from former president John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins). Steven Spielberg directed this moving film, using as a reference the book by William A. Owens, BLACK MUTINY: THE REVOLT ON THE SCHOONER AMISTAD. The Africans in the movie speak Mende, with subtitles added. West African actor Djimon Hounsou had to learn to speak the language for his role--and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Spielberg shot the film at the State House in Providence, Rhode Island, the seaport in Mystic, Connecticut, and other New England locations.

  • Amazing Film

To start, the performances from the actors are phenomenal (especially from Djimon Hounsou and Matthew McConaughey). The subject matter is unsettling. President Van Buren is treated in a complicated matter as he is shown caving in to the South too quickly. (Which can make sense to some as he didn't show too much anti-slavery feelings until much later in his life.) The trial is thorough and played out realistically. Any potential narm moments such as Cinque's courthouse speech to set him and his fellow Africans free are made charming in this film and bound to provoke tears in the eyes of a few moviegoers. And it's scored by the same composer and director of Schnidler's List. That right there can make this film worth checking out.

  • Excellent movie but hard to watch.

Here is a movie that was hard for me to watch because of the violence, cruel, and inhuman treatmet of Africans on a slave ship being transported to American, and what they had to endure on their journey. This being a true event in history makes it a sad and heart felt story. Excellent acting by Morgan Freeman, Matthew McConaugey, Djimon Hounsou and Anthony Hopkins. They all bought their characters to life in a way that was compelling and believable. This move represents the shame and degradation a people had to experience in a quest for freedom. I recommend seeing this movie.

  • Amastad

i thought it was a great movie but also very sad. i bought the movie because i like any true story and i like to learn about history. what thoese people whent through was horrible. some times when i get discusted with life and the way things are going for me i think about the slaves and how much they made it through.and realise i shouldnt complain but be gratful for the freedom we all now have.

  • Amistad VHS movie

This VHS movie is a replacement for a previous copy which I loaned to a friend and never did receive back. The movie is an EXCELLENT one and I wanted it put back in my movie collection. I don't believe it is available on DVD but it had a "home" on my VHS shelf and now it is back where it belongs. If you haven't seen this one, it is one I believe you will thoroughly enjoy.

  • Amistad-History we wish had never happened.

This movie is gut wrenching and heartwarming and serves as a good history lesson to those unaware of the travesties taking place in our nation's early days. At times this movie is painful to watch but it's important to see in order to understand why some rules and laws are necessary.
