About this product

Product Information

In 1914, some patriotic Frenchmen, living in a small town on the west coast of Africa, find out about the war with Germany, declaring: "I would have thought it would be with England." Immediately, the lazy sergeant organizes his little army of ill-trained natives, and marches on the neighboring German fort, accompanied by shopkeepers and their wives. To everyone's surprise, German fire power cuts down the advancing mob, leaving Hubert, a righteous young geologist in charge. Accompanied by his black mistress, Hubert bulldozes the "troops" into a semblance of order. What ensues is a subtly funny statement on war and power. This Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Film is one of the greatest works in the diverse career of French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud (THE BEAR/THE NAME OF THE ROSE).

  • Black and White in Color (The Sky Above, The Mud Below)

I really bought this DVD for the full length documentary bonus feature "The Sky Above, The Mud Below". I give this movie 5 stars + but only 3 stars for Black and White in Color". The "Sky above" is one of the most beautifully filmed and powerful documentaries ever made. It documents a 1959 French expedition across Dutch New Guinea into uncharted and unmanageable territory that took 7 months to go 400 miles. Three people died and the whole expedition catches malaria. Airlifts of supplies had trouble finding the expedition in the dense jungle. In one section, the entire team went three days without food or medical supplies. They met head-hunting cannibal tribes that never saw any human beings except their warring neighbor tribes. In the 60's the younger generation flooded the theaters by ...

  • The sky above the mud below

I bought this based on a childhood memory. Excitement was its key word. The film ended abruptly due to a power failure just at a point they were dealing with leeches. I always wanted to see the end but could not remember the name of the film, so I was thrilled to find it added on to the DVD Black and White in Color which is itself an amazing and unique film. Wonderful directing in both and natural shameless production makes the former great even for children as it deals with nudity in a normal fashion taking away the current hype around sex and bodies. Highly recommend this docofilm.
