About this product

Product Information

Ridley Scott (BLADE RUNNER, ALIEN) transports Hollywood to second-century Rome in this rousing historical epic that proudly harkens back to such films as BEN-HUR and SPARTACUS. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an aging Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he'd like him to rule Rome once he's gone, a classic confrontation ensues between the brave and charming soldier--who wants to return home to his wife, son, and farm--and the jealous and conniving Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor's only son, who is thirsty for power. Bought as a slave by the profiteering Proximo (Oliver Reed, in his last role), Maximus must kill or be killed in the ring, battling to save not only himself but the future of the very empire that he loves and honors. The film features a terrific battle sequence (that recalls the beginning of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), huge crowd scenes of thousands of people, and even a little romance, albeit mostly taboo. The impeccably choreographed gladiator scenes are violent yet thrilling, flashing by like lightning. GLADIATOR is a glorious spectacle filled with heart and soul.

  • 2 PLUS HOUR LONG ROMP!

WOW! THIS IS AN AWESOME MOVIE! RANKS IN MY TOP TEN MOVIES AND I'VE SEEN A TON O' MOVIES! THIS MOVIE PULLS OUT ALL THE STOPS SO TO SPEAK! VIVID GORE ACTION LIKE THAT OF SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, EXTRAORDINARY STORYTELLING THAT MAKES YOU FEEL HATE FOR THOSE WHO ARE EVIL, AND GREAT FOR THOSE WHO FIGHT AGAINST EVIL! RUSSELL CROWE WAS A PERFECT FIT FOR THE LEAD ROLE-MANLY, YET COMPASSIONATE-FIGHTING FOR A CAUSE! THIS IS A PERFECT ACTION FLICK FOR THE ACTION JUNKIE SUCH AS I! 12 STARS ************ OUT OF 10! THANXXXXXXX 4 LISTENING!

  • Not Ben-Hur or Spartacus

Forty years separate this movie from Ben-Hur and Spartacus. Forty years where technology improved while acting declined. And when you examine the technology, you realize that it is all noise and images as opposed to enhanced color and vibrant settings. The story is somewhat fabricated. Russel Crowe appears pumped up into a mythic hero of sorts. Joaquin Phoenix looks the part of a demented Roman Emperor, but falls short in the portrayal. With a cast of talented actors, it could have been a much better production. There are points of interest to make. Oliver Reed passed away before completion. You will notice some fast clips to compensate towards the end of the movie. His last word in the movie was a grunt. With Richard Harris portraying Caesar Marcus Aurelius, you get the feeling ...

  • THE MIGHTY GLADIATOR

The extended version of Gladiator is a lot better than the theatrical version. It is more thrilling, exciting, intense and graphic. I enjoyed this version. All the new scenes just added more to the story. This movie is Best Picture material (it won the Oscar for Best Picture). Ebert and Roeper should be ashamed of themselves giving a cinematic classic like this two thumbs down. When they do their work they call "reviews", they should asked themselves, "Am I not merciful?" Someone should asked Ebert & Roeper, "Are you not entertained?" People like me who don't like film critics were entertained by this movie. I can't wait to watch The Lord of the Rings: Special Extended Edition Trilogy

  • An awesome movie for Roman history buffs!

The movie has excellent special effects concerning the time that it took place in the late 2nd century AD. The movie brings ancient Rome virtually back to life during the final days of the rule of Marcus Aurelius and the early days of the rule of Commodus.

  • Gladiator

The casing was cracked but did not affect the picture. It probably was damaged during shipping. I liked the movie very well. I always liked this movie and now I have the freedom to watch it anytime I want to.
