About this product

Product Information

The Canon Speedlite 550ex Flash is an accessory that needs to be in every photographer’s toolbox. It is compatible with type-A EOS Canon cameras for the E-TTL, or evaluative through the lens, auto flash control and with type-B EOS cameras for the TTL auto flash control. The Canon Speedlite 550ex Flash is powerful and easy to use. The E-TTL automatic flash has been refined from earlier flashes and improves the photo quality of nearly every Canon camera. Whether you are a professional photographer or an amateur, adding this flash to your arsenal allows you to take spectacular photographs regardless of the conditions. One neat feature of the Canon 550ex flash is that it also works as a wireless master, allowing you to trigger remote flashes. Additionally, it also works as a slave to other Canon Speedlite 550ex flashes. The features include manual power selection, flash exposure control, and manual zoom settings. This flash also helps with focusing on many Canon cameras as the focus assist light that the flash projects helps cameras focus faster and accurately, even if there is a low contrast surface. This also allows you to bounce the flash off of other surfaces or reflectors. You have the ability to use light softening accessories with this flash. The Canon Speedlite 550ex Flash does a better job of preventing red-eye effects and half-moon shadows than previous digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) flash accessories, meaning it delivers better results and added control to your photography. The Canon Speedlite 550ex specifications include direct-sync, shoe-mount flash with E-TTL auto flash control, wireless transmission, and reception. It also includes E-TTL pre-flash, an autofocus assist beam, auto zoom, and bounce flash. The flash sits well above the lens, which also helps reduce the number of half-moon shadows in your pictures. The auto zoom head covers lens focal lengths of 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 70mm, 80mm, and 105mm automatically. The manual zoom is enabled with a zoom button. The Canon Speedlite 550ex works with up to seven modes, including normal flash, quick flash high-speed sync, stroboscopic flash, pre-flash, test flash, and modeling flash. The stroboscopic flash has 41 frequency settings and 31 firing settings. The flash is powered using four AA LR6 batteries or with a compact battery pack. Most of these features are available if you own a Type-A EOS camera. However, it is possible that some features are unavailable in Type-B cameras. In Type-B cameras, it works as a TTL auto flash unit. This unit is the ideal addition to any photographer’s studio and is suitable for amateurs as well as professionals. It will allow even the most amateur of photographers to take stunning and awe-inspiring images of the people and things in their lives, and may even jumpstart their photography career. It is powerful and creates high-quality pictures when used correctly. The trick to taking great pictures with this flash is simple: know your camera and how it operates. Once you have that understanding, adding this flash to your camera’s accessories is an easy step.

Good ballance of the most used features for a flash.

It has a good balnce of the most needed features. FP (high speed shutter sync) wireless capability built in when used with command mode on the camera. I have used it with the Nikon D200 and D300. The head can go bacwards for bonce flash from behind when camera mounted. It has focus assist lighting, multi strobe feature, standby mode to save power, and auto zoom for the beam width. It is also fairly compact.

It's okay, but the slowish refresh limits its uses.

This flash is an old design and it's refresh rate is a bit on the slow side compared to new flashes. For studio work or stills it's fine. Definitely wouldn't recommend for events, however.

  • No more cords....

The speedlite 550 ex has delivered great results thus far. I use it in tandum with an EOS 10D and the Sto-fen Omni Bounce which delivers great results. Although I have shot for professionally years, this is my first experience with TTL or ETTL. The old tried and true way of hand held meters, flash to suject distance and balancing the flash with the ambient light was the way I learned and practiced the craft with my medium format equipment."This is a useful skill to know"..."Although one can get quite speedy with the process, One "CANNOT" keep up with the speed and accuracy of the 550 ex". So far the 550 ex is nailing the balance dead on. Of course it took the normal process of getting to know the unit and the camera it's attached to..."Oh, and ...

  • Most of the performance of a 580EXII at a fraction of the price.

I wanted a second flash for my 40D that could be used as a master to control my 430EXII, but I'm just a hobbyist and not a pro, so spending $400-500 for the 580EXII was way out of my budget. After a little looking around, I heard the 550EX performed nearly as well as the 580EXII for a mere fraction of the price. I picked one up that is as good as new and it works just as it should. I haven't done a lot with it yet, but it works great and does the job of controlling my 430EXII just as it should. The battery door is a little awkward versus the newer Speedlites, but it's not that big of a deal to me. The 580EXII is also said to have a longer battery life and recharge time over the 550EX, but for my usage, it doesn't hinder me any. The 550EX has a release button for the tilt and another for ...

  • Canon Speedlite 550EX

*Disclaimer: I would say that I am an intermediate level photo enthusiast, and the idea of flash photography is a whole new realm for me, so bear with me, this review isn't going to be thorough. Before purchasing this flash, I only knew it was the predecessor of the 580EX as Canon's top of the line. The one I particularly received was in extremely mint condition, so it was well worth the money. When it comes to usage, I'm not quite sure what to say since I'm still trying to figure out how to get what I want out of it. I use it on ETTL (which I guess is probably auto) and usually use it on Manual (M) or Aperture value (Av). So far, after reading through a variety of online guides, my best photos came out using it indoors and bouncing it off the ceilings or walls. My usual setting is in ...
