Edward Norton gives an impassioned performance as Derek Vinyard, a Southern Californian skinhead who must do time after committing a hateful murder. Once in jail, his mind opens and he sees the error of his ways. Upon reentering the real world, he must now turn his attentions to his younger brother Danny, who is swiftly heading down the same path as his brother. Controversy surrounded the film when director Tony Kaye disowned it, claiming that Norton had the film re-edited without Kaye's permission. Norton still got an Oscar Nomination for his intense performance.

They don't make 'em like this anymore
Race is one of the issues that's the mainstream media has a bias, to say the least, towards. When it comes to issues in the black culture. It seems that there's a never ending list of films that seek to show the problem, but never offer a solution. It seems the only exist to place blame on society and cause feelings of white guilt among the viewers. I say white guilt because every film has zero issues taking racial shots at white people. This film takes a look at what creates a white radical, instead of portraying them in the stereotypical fashion. Vinyard is a very intelligent, and wise beyond his years young man in the suburbs. His father is murdered by a black man. That drives him over to the radial group of neo nazis. From here the film takes a no holds barred look at why someone would ... Issues like illegal immigration destroying the job market for the youth. Racism from the black culture towards white culture driving the divide, thus causing racism, justifying his racism. The out of control crime rate such as 13% of America, aka blacks, being responsible for half the crime in the country. Vinyard's mother dates a Jewish man. Vinyard raises the issues of how member's of the Jewish faith dominate the banking industry and others. It tackles the cultural and financial issues white men have to face, and turns the mainstream narrative on it's head. Vinyard's radicalism only intensifies as his crimes escalate. Eventually he ends up in prison. The story is told through the eyes of Derek's younger brother - Danny, writing about Derek's life for a history report. As Derek realizes the fallacy of his ways in prison, Danny starts to follow his older brothers path. The film shows a cycle of hatred and violence brought about by cultural and societal problem. It puts the blame squarely on our own individual choices, but shows how these cultural and societal problems influence those decisions. However, unlike most films of today on this subject, it doesn't seek to place blame, biasedly, on one side or the other. Instead it highlights the issues we all face in our society and culture. It highlights that the answer lies in changing ourselves if we want the world to be a better place. I've found no other film to be as truthful or inspiring as this film. Warning, this will trigger your weak minded safe space friends. So it's for intelligent audiences that actually want to learn something only.
