Authoritative classic for woodworkers.
This book is the Gold Standard for woodworkers. My first copy came with the sawmill that I bought thirty years ago, and I have read it through several times since.

"Understanding Wood" was exactly what I was looking for at a great price. I recommend it to all who want to know more about wood. That may not be for everyone but if you work with wood, are thinking about making furniture or cabinets, or even a cabin then this will be a very helpful book.

This is a book serious woodworkers should have at their elbow while designing any furniture or construction project. Much of the learning process with wood comes from reading books and information from others, such as a teacher or friend. The ultimate teacher is experience and practiced observation of your results and reviewing your process. Hoadley can save you years of work by explaining and showing you why wood behaves the way it does. This is Number One Reference Book for Woodworkers
There comes a time in a woodworkers journey that pine, oak, cherry and other common woods just don't make it on the list of project woods. Hoadley covers wood ID,wood movement, wood strength, and working with and finishing wood. If you are working with american woods, you should have this book.
