About this product

Product Information

The Metropolitan Opera mounted this production of Gioachino Rossini's seminal 1816 opera buffa The Barber of Seville in 1989. As produced for the stage by the eminent John Cox, with sets by Robin Wagner and costumes by Patricia Zipprodt, the revival stars Rockwell Blake as the nobleman Count Almaviva, Enzo Dara as Bartolo, Kathleen Battle as Rosina and Leo Nucci as Figaro. The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus lend musical accompaniment, with Ralf Weikert conducting and David Stivender serving as chorus master, and James Levine as musical director.

Unfortunately, this DVD's case got broken in transit, but the seller was kind enough to give a small refund for the damage. Otherwise, smooth transaction, fast delivery, and the other items I purchased that came in the same package arrive undamaged. Items were just as described. Thank you.=)

  • Barber of Seville

I love this performance. I've waited for years to see it in high resolution. I don't like all opera, but this is one I think anyone can enjoy. The performance was circa 1989. I saw it on PBS with subtitles that allowed me to understand the story. The New York Met has great production values, the sets and costumes are interesting on their own. The story is HILARIOUS. Kathleen Battle is lovely. Leo Nucci is the perfect Figaro (better than Bugs Bunny!). Look up the plot, if you think that sounds good, this is a wonderful rendition. Presenting it on two discs allows a detailed image and spectacular sound, as my neighbors can attest. Be sure and turn on the subtitles. If you can figure out what those pills are that Don Bartolo is taking, let me know!

  • Schöne Aufführung

Das ist eine sehr schöne Aufführung. Ich habe von dieser Besetzung (Nucci, Battle) viel erwartet - und meine Erwartungen wurden erfüllt.
