A fantastic look back at the formation of the nation called ISRAEL and Ingrid Bergman is superb in the role. Truly recommend this for compulsory viewing, besides being totally enjoyable.

A great film performed by a Great Actress.
This film is historically correct about Israel becoming a State. When Ms. Bergman was asked to do the film she did not feel she could do Golda the justice she deserved. Six Months later she called and asked if we still wanted her. A resounding yes was the answer. Ms. Bergman said she would first require a screen test to be sure her looks and performance would honor this great lady. Make up appliances and hair were done to make her look believable as Golda. Imagine one of histories greatest actresses asking for a screen test after what she had accomplished in her career. Ms Bergman had cancer and could not be insured, yet it was decided that we would go forward with the film anyway. Ms. Bergman would bring her nurse with her who was also her good friend. Funny how her nurse looked just like ... This film is historically correct about Israel becoming a State. She was too tired to see dalies at the end of each days shooting so I would take her on Shabbot (Saturdays) our day off in Israel to see the previous weeks film. Then we would go to lunch. She never complained once about her pain. Her arm was so swollen we had to add material to her wardrobe so her arm would fit in the sleeve for the scenes in Africa. The last week of filming was to be done in America at the school that Golda attended. This is for the scene where Golda goes back to 4th Street Grade School in Milwaukee and speaks to the children. As Ingrid's health was rapidly deteriorating it was clear that the trip to America would be too taxing on Ingrid's health. It was decided I would go to London to find locations that would match what we needed for the School scenes. This way Ingrid could be more comfortable in her own home after filming each day. The film was finished in London. Ingrid died 4 months after the making of the film but her legend still lives on. She was a wonderful and amazing woman. We were close friends and I still miss her. Ingrid posthumously received the Golden Globe and Emmy Awards for Best actress. What could be a better way to the end of a career. A truly great lady portraying another truly great lady.
