    Thorough explaination of the times and how they influenced a new decorataive style

    This volume on the Biedermeier furniture style of the early1800s, how and why it developed, is simply excellent. The authors do not attempt to make it an easy explanation, but instead give clarity to the times and influences that brought about the design(s). They show what makes a piece "biedermeier" and explain how and why Biedermeier takes on different outward appearances, depending on the various master craftsman and the localities where a specific piece was made in a way that adds to the reader's understanding of the style. They show how previous and contemporaneous European designs influenced Biedermeier and how the political and cultural movements of the times played their major role. I read the volume in one sitting, didn't want to put it down!
