Legion of Mary 2-CD Set.
The "Legion of Mary" was a short lived side project that was put together by Grateful Dead creator and front-man Jerry Garcia. I was skeptical at first about buying a release from Rhino Records taken from master tapes circa 1975. I remember back in the vinyl days when I couldn't drive or walk past a record shop without spending at least 100 bucks at a time. I would always shy away from Rhino Records because they were always the ones you saw on TV selling compilations of Greatest Hits, Best of's, etc. and I thought that the vinyl they used was second rate. I always had to have (and still do) strictly original, mint condition first rate vinyl (or virgin vinyl but good luck finding that in a place where recycle is king. You could usually only find it in imports). However, 20+ years later, I ... You could usually only find it in imports). However, 20+ years later, I decided to give it a shot because of the nature of the material that was on the discs. Needless to say, upon receiving this item from someone who had it in their private collection, I was immediately impressed with the way it was packaged, in a conservative but well thought of CD jacket where the CD's aren't going to get damaged. It also comes with a booklet describing the life and times of the band and how they came about, with photos of each member. Upon listening to it through a rather high end audio system, the sound quality was actually pretty good. Being the vinyl nut that I am, I can definitely deal with this. The music that they chose for this is in my opinion, the best stuff from this band and all the tracks were taken live-cut from the original soundboard recordings and each piece is performed in it's entirety. So when you get your CD in the mail, what you end up with is a world-class compilation of live bluesy sort-of funk, jazzy, whatever sound all of it's own, with just the right mixture of that classic, unmistakable Bay Area sound that we've all come to know and love. Hat's off to Rhino for a job well done.

The Absolute Balls!
Legion of Mary is such a great period, Jerry's playing is in top form. If you can find the release including the bonus disc, get it! Well worth having.
