I love my A100!
I had a Canon Rebel XS DSLR a few years ago and I loved it. I never did anything professional, but I did and do take my photography pretty seriously. I ended up selling that camera and regretted it ever since then. With that camera I had pretty much the same accessories this kit comes with, and I had a 50mm f1.8 lens and tripod (which I already bought both of for the Sony!). I would say as far as ease of use, the Sony gets a 4/5 compared to the Canon's 5/5. The only difference really in terms of function is that the Canon had a live-view mode which made zooming in and manually focusing very easy. I do a lot of low to the ground shooting so using the eye-piece is difficult for me at 6' 4. With that said, I would say the Sony is a little better build quality and the body itself fits ... I couldn't find a kit for the Canon equivalent for anywhere near this price, and the Canon kit only comes with the 35-55 lens. The accessories for the Canon (and Nikon) cameras tend to be a little bit cheaper, just because they are more plentiful, but also keep in mind that you can buy adapter plates to use other lenses, AND you can use Minolta lenses on a Sony DSLR. Huge plus. The imagine quality is standard for a 10MP crop sensor DSLR. With that said, it is excellent. Easily on par with my Canon camera. I do definitely recommend buying at least one lens outside of the kit lenses. The common lens for a beginner that is of great quality and value is the 50MM f/1.8. It is a lens that can usually be found for $100 or so and offers a very fast optic, with very good quality. Keep in mind though that a 50MM lens on a cropped sensor like these equates closer to the 65MM mark, so it isn't necessarily good for tight quarter shoots. If I had to pick some negatives for the camera, definitely a big one for me is that there is no live-view LCD mode, at least not that I can find. Something else that is a tad annoying is that Sony decided to make the SD cards unique to Sony products and the USB is also unique to Sony products. Not a big deal, but something to keep in mind. I had a USB cord that while it did plug into the camera, still did not work for transferring photos. Also, there is no option to save JPEG + RAW, all I can find is either JPEG or RAW. I don't have Lightroom or Photoshop, so RAW files don't work for me even though I would much prefer to shoot with it. All in all, I love this camera and I am very very happy with my choice to go with Sony this time around. I have a feeling I will be with this camera for a good bit of time! P.S.- For budget minded enthusiasts, a great photo-editing app is online and called pixlr. It offers a good bit of the features that Photoshop offeres, and it is free!

There were no lenses included with this camera. In order to use the camera, means that $500-$1,000 would need to be spent for these essential items. I cannot write a fair review as I cannot actually use the camera as is. Thank you.

Good bang for the buck!
While this camera may not have all the bells and whistles like an A750 model, it is still able to get the job done well. I am a photography student so I can't afford the biggest and best, but after doing extensive research and reading endless reviews on multipe sites, I concluded that the A100 would be a good buy for me. I already owned a Minolta SLR (film) and I LOVE that I don't have to buy new lenses! Minolta was a great camera company and Sony basically took it over (and the lenses are interchangeable). While we all know Sony is known for electronics and not cameras, I have to say they have done a superb job in keeping up with Canon and Nikon. One of the best features on the A100 is the Super Steadyshot (greatly reduces blur/camera shake), while one problem I have noticed is ... Best DSLR Camera you can buy under $1000
While aging a bit now in it's 4-5 year of service life, i have two Sony A100's. I've used Canon EOS series and a Nikon D90. This camera is very comparable in quality and options. It's age is the only down fall at this point. Lacking any Video capture and continuous shooting speeds that lag compared to newer cameras, these can be easily overlooked by any serious photographer who lives on a budget. I have two that have excellent Sigma and Minolta brand lenses that i also bought on a budget. Due to the A100's in body stability. the lenses dont have to have expensive optical stabilization and thus can be picked up from 30-150 bucks. Compared to Nikon's prices that would only cover the tax. So quality for quality, i choose the sony A series every time. But if you ... Sony a (alpha) DSLR-A100 Purchase
WOW What a Camera, this makes me look Professional with out hardly trying!! The fact that I can use my original Minolta lenses was the best too!! Just for fun I just charged up the battery, unpacked the Memory card and off I went. Everyone I know can't believe the quality of my pics'. Even a good friend who has a middle line Nikon set is jealous. Point, shoot and take Kick-a$% pictures! It's adjustability and ease of use to work with the controls turned out to be a real asset. The accessories,available quality of lenses etc.. has turned out to be a real joy to explore the next level of photograhy. I took lessons in college and this camera made it very easy to aplly everything I learned without having to decipher some 3,000 page manual etc.. just do what you know and the ...
